Gas pump question

Not sure if anyone can answer this, but are we getting ripped off at the pumps when we use high test? I ask because most if not all pumps have the one hose and nozzle to dispense gas, unless they have a "suck back" system in place, it means that every time I fill up my voyager with premium, I get whatever is in the hose from the previous customer, which is usually regular which in turn contains ethanol, up here we pay by the litre, and it is normally 15 to 20 cents a litre more. The cost is not what concerns me as much as the ethanol and low premium gas I may be getting. It is not a big concern if I am putting a lot in but when I am just topping up it could be.

It can't be a lot we are getting. The one time I had to put regular in I had the pinging start within 30kms. Only time I have ever had that. So I doubt I am getting much regular gas each time.
On an odd note - Last Sunday I filled up twice with a dedicated high test pump. You can go months up here without running into one

I doubt there is that much fuel in the hose back to the pump, less than a litre I would think.

I took a guess that the hose is 3/4" diameter inside, 6' long it would hold approximately 1/8 of a gallon.....M

Its like the electricity in a cable. You pay for it as soon as it passes the meter, then it travels all through the house, and out the back yard through the cable to the bench saw. If you switch it of at the meter, the saw stops dead,so does the meter, switch it back on and the saw starts,so does the meter. What happened to all the electricity in the cable that you allready paid for.

The pump hose is always full and contains roughly half a litre of fuel, so the first 500 millilitres will be whatever grade the last customer purchased.

I always kept a small bottle of octane booster on the bike in case the need arose. Needed it once or twice is all.

Exclamation Mark

According to a Senior Investigator from Arizona Weights and Measures. Using the newer pumps starting in 2008, there will be one tenth (0.1) of a gallon from the previous purchase. The older pumps prior prior to 2008 would normally be 0.3 of a gallon. All four of the major pump manufacturers are within 0.1 of a gallon following the new rules.

If that's what you are worried about, use gas from pumps with multiple hoses, you get a lot less residual from the pump.

The multi hose pumps are becoming more scarce. But they are still better than the multi grade single hose pumps.
