Cruise Control

I've had recent trouble with my Cruise Control on my Vaquero in that sometimes it won't engage, when it does the speed of the bike increases and I can't shut it off. Has anybody had a similar problem and if they did can you tell me how your Mechanic resolved the problem.

Under the rear pedal is a little micro switch, that is the trigger to turn it off when you tap the rear brake. It is not the one with the spring...that is for the brake lights. The micro switch gets dirty...clean it, hit it with a little WD 40.

I had this exact thing happen on my 2001 HD Ultra Classic. They ended up changing out the complete cruise control unit under warranty.

ive been having periodic cut offs on my cruise but it comes right back.. always sets ok but at hiway speed sometime will quickly shut off and come back in a split second..like a hiccup... i called kaw and dealer who both said they have never heard of that... but at least they have it on record if it gets worse ( only 4 times in 5000 miles ) so make sure you call kawasaki about it.. vulcanrider i want to add that trunk to my nomad but havin a hard time spendin 1500.. are they same price everywhere ?

This line right here would have me going back to the dealer ASAP! " when it does the speed of the bike increases and I can't shut it off." This would be a definite safety issue.

Thanks for the input guys, Dealer has changed the ECU & Kawasaki paid for that. I'll check the Rear Brake switch as a few have suggested, it seems like a common thread & hopefully that cures the problem. Cheers

Did they replace the ECU for the cruise control issue or for something else?

Hsd the issue where cruise wouldn't engage. Cleaned the sensor near the rear brake pedal. All is good now

Mine hiccups too

I too have had three times in 23,000 miles that my cruise skipped a beat. It dropped out like it saw a brake light signal and then immediately hammers the throttle to pick up the speed to set point. It happens so quickly-like 1/2 second total. It does seem that it has a harder time engaging at initial set points lately. A set point will drop off 2-3 mph and then take several hundred yards to speed back up to the original set point. Once it's leveled out it works endlessly for miles.

I see no way that a brake switch could cause an acceleration issue. It either won't set or won't shut off,

Yes, mine has done the same thing - a quick skip-a-beat than fine. Not sure if I am starting to have the slow to return to the original set-point problem or not. It is so intermittent that I don't see a reasonable way to troubleshoot. It has happened a few times in the last two years (36,000 miles). Unless it gets worse, I am not going to worry about it too much.

Mine has refused to engage a couple of times in over 54k. The last time was yesterday! Only thing I can call it is a hiccup in the ECU. I stop, shut the bike down, start right back up and take off, it works fine again.

Never heard of one refusing to disengage, and accelerating on its own. Scary stuff!

No need to guess, the bike has onboard diagnostics.
Select first gear, press and hold the S button and turn the key on. The display will say chec and a number will be displayed beneath. post the number and I'll tell you the fault.

hey guys... please call kawasaki to report your cruise hiccups... they tell me they have not heard of this happining but if other owners mention it, they will note it, research it, and perhaps come out with a fix... i am concerned my warranty will expire and it will crash... please call them.. it will benefit us all
