Final Drive
Hi,
I just did my first rear tire change went with a Metzler 880, 180/70/16. I used a chain hoist to lift the rear end of the bike up, just wrapped a chain around the top mounts of the saddle bag guards, it worked realy slick. I have access to a lift, but was nervous about the stability. My question is: after putting it all back together and riding for 10 miles or so, I came back home and looked at the rear end to make sure everything looked OK. I did notice that the final drive gear case is warm to the touch. Is this normal, not hot, but warm. I am worried that I may have done something wrong. It all went back together easily, and I didn't have any parts left over. Do me a favor to ease my mind, after riding a few miles check your rear drive case and tell me if yours is warm to the touch. I will be taking a trip to western Wyoming Leaving on June 18 for a week, I don't want any trouble. Thanks in advance, Terbear Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Its totally normal to feel some heat in the final drive. If it was real hot, I'd say you might wanna check it out some. But warm enough so you can hold your hand on it comfortably is normal. BD and others have said to fill it on the sidestand as opposed to straight up and down. This to prevent overfill and leaking out the seal. Have a great day!!!! Mike

IMO it'll be hot just because of proximity to the muffler.
Two things though, I always tighten the axle before I tighten the 4 acorn nuts holding on the drive case. This prevents it from putting side pressure on the swingarm & mis-aligning things. I also change the gear box oil frequently. Normally at every 2000 to 3000 miles when I change the engine oil. |
