Long and short oil filter?

Did I read somewhere that there are two types of screw on oil filters available for the 1500/1600...one having a longer body than the other? If so, does the longer filter provide better filtering and who makes it?

Thanks guys. Right there is what I luv about this forum.

I went to the Gadgets link which is pretty much the page Framer posted. That led me to another link showing multiple oil filters opened up so you can see how they're made. The Purolater PL14610 got top honors and is one of the longer body filters. Strangly enough, Wal-Marts ST7317 beat out many of the other well know brands that are assumed to be top quality...but aren't. The K&N 204 I have been used got a very poor rating.
Here's a link to that page if your interested.

Guess I'll be shopping for Purolaters or Walmart filters from now on

OOPS! The purolater website says do not use a Purolater PL14610 on a motorcycle. Heres a link. Read the very last paragraph at the bottom.

http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/...tsfilters.aspx

They recommend thier ML16187 filter for Kawasaki 1500/1600.

The Super Tech ST7317 is no longer made in the USA. I still have 3 or 4 of the USA made ones in my garage. They are of no use to me anymore.

I've always used the Bosch 3323 on my 1600 Vulcan classic, easy to find at Autozone.

Dammit man! I have always used a Fram, one of the worst according to the list.
So where can I find one of these Purolater ML16187 filters? Wal mart?
May try the Bosch, if they are better?

That might be true if you run regular oil. I've always ran synthetic. I run 5w40.

There's pages and pages of discussion about this on the internet and I haven't found one person who said he's had oil flow problems due to running this filter on his bike. I'm beginning to think its hype so that people will buy Purolator's ML series filters (made for motorcycles) instead.
Supposedly the by pass valve pressure (12 to 14 PSI) is higher than some motorcycle engines oil flow is rated at. Well hell, the by pass valve doesn't even come into play unless the filter is so plugged up oil cant flow thru it. If you change it regularly it's a non issue. Besides, all the oil filters listed for the 1500/1600 series are rated 12-14 PSI By pass pressure anyhow!
I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Yeah, I hear ya. I've been using the K&N 204 and its rated at the bottom too. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, isn't it?
