rear shock question

I ain't no mechanic but I changed shocks on my trucks etc. but not on a bike. I have which looks like oil leaking out of my left rear shock and getting thrown around on the wheel. It doesn't do it all the time. I never really cared for the air shocks and found a set of progressive 412 for $269. Now do the stock shocks have oil in them even though they are air shocks?

Yes they do. Might check to see if the leak is just from a leaky Schrader valve.

They have oil in them, and only use a hand pump to inflate the air shocks or else they will blow the small air bladder inside.

Put the 412's on.

I've been running them for 6 years now and absolutely love them.

The day I removed the stock air shocks was one of the happiest days of my life.

MAS, what did the 412's do for your ride vs the stock shocks? I ride 2 up and we're not light weights - I feel the bumps and it feels like the shocks are bottoming out.
Your input on the difference would be appreciated.

The first thing was not having to check the pressure EVER again.

The 412s smoothed out a lot of thud type bumps and at the same time made corners much more manageable.

I used the 412 heavy duty model, I wouldn't recommend these for a 175lb person who always rides one up, but for the larger guys or couples they are great.

Oh and did I say no more air to check and add?

I check the air pressure once a month. So far I have not lost any air pressure. I had the HD 412's on my shadow. Yep they made a very big difference vs stock but hated getting on the floor to change the damper setting when riding 2 up.

Can you change the damper on those 412's with the bags on?

I'd like to know the same about adjusting settings with bags on.

I have the 412's on my scoot as well and for us plus size people they work great. I don't think I could get to them to change the damping unless the bags are removed but I haven't tried to either.

My question is why is it always the left side that develops the leak. Same thing happened on my scoot. I have also noticed when trying to find a replacement shock the right are usually available but the lefts very rarely. Got Progressive 412's on mine now.

Shocks are on winter maintenance list. Is it a straight forward swap?
