This got my blood boiling...

This happened in a rural area of suburban Salt Lake City. I used to travel this area to go fishing. My guess is the motorist was some farmer putting along on the two-lane highway, and the rider was unable to pass. Poor judgment on the rider's part. Criminal action on the motorists' part. Road rage, my butt - this was attempted murder.

Road rage alleged after pickup hits motorcycle
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 05/30/2008 12:58:35 AM MDT

An Eagle Mountain man faces possible charges of aggravated assault for chasing and hitting a motorcyclist, then "jumping" him after the motorcycle crashed.
Police are calling the Wednesday crash an act of road rage. The 53-year-old suspect became irate when the motorcyclist followed his pickup truck too closely on Redwood Road, said Saratoga Springs Cpl. Aaron Rosen.
After the two men exchanged words at the intersection of Redwood Road and Highway 73, the motorcyclist attempted to leave the area but was chased down by the pickup driver, Rosen said.
The truck hit the bike on a roundabout, knocking its driver to the street. The suspect left his truck and had attacked the fallen motorcyclist when police responded to the scene, Rosen said.
The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries and did not need to be hospitalized, Rosen said. Police were investigating whether the truck struck the motorcycle more than once.
The pickup driver was released from jail on bail of $9,999.

Two wrongs don't make a right. The motorcyclist is probably not without some blame here, but to chase down a bike in a pickup truck with the intent of causing harm is no different than if the truck driver pulled a weapon and shot the rider, in my mind.

Moral of the story, be careful who you piss off. Watch your gestures, mouth, and actions when on your bike. It just ain't worth it.

I agree, though it is hard for me to practice it at times.

I've been known (on my immature days) to flip somebody off that deserved it, only to have that escalate into them doing even more stupid stuff.

Whatever satisfaction one gets from flipping somebody off (I'll admit that it is satisfying in the short term for me) isn't worth the increased risk to your safety.

The crumedgeon that runs that safety site that I have a link to in the sticky says something to the effect of, "if you can't control your middle finger, you don't belong on a bike". He's probably right.

I know in your story Cactus, that it was some form of a conversation, not flipping off. But anything that escalates a bad situation is risking trouble. Not something you need on a bike.

I wonder if the guy will get off too easy. If you ever see how it gets resolved, come back and post it huh?

Will do. I check the SL paper daily, the last remnant of my former life.

The other day, when I was riding to Tucson there's a stretch of about 40 miles of 2-lane as you leave Florence. I came up a hill and there was some clown coming towards me, in my lane, passing 4-5 other vehicles. He cut it so close I had to move to the shoulder to maintain my margin of safety. I gave him the one-finger salute as he went by. I then looked over my shoulder for the next few miles in case he came back after me.

It was only in the Tribune. The "other paper" probably didn't cover it because it involved a biker. I think you know what I mean.

Road rage is a recently coined term, but it's been around forever.

Check this out.

But as this charioteer lurched over towards me
I struck him in my rage...
He was paid back, and more!
Swinging my club in this right hand I knocked him
Out of his car, and he rolled on the ground.
I killed him.... I killed them all.

Thanks for the link Wolfman, here is part of their version. I don't think I want this cop to ever investigate anything to do with me.

Police say the biker made a U-turn in an escape attempt, but Miller followed him to a neighborhood. Police say Miller hit the biker with his truck then got out of his vehicle and began assaulting the biker as he lay pinned beneath his motorcycle.

Miller was arrested for aggravated assault, but officers also say the biker shouldn't have been tailgating Miller's truck. They say lessons were learned all around.

The biker told police he was following the pickup driver closely to avoid deer. Police say he shouldn't have done that. They say the pickup driver shouldn't have done what he did either. "It's a non-issue. It shouldn't have happened. It's a silly incident," said Cpl. Aaron Rosen, of the Saratoga Springs Police Department.
