It would have come with one originally, without taking a look under the RH crankcase cover you won't know for sure. I'd definately take a look asap just to make sure it has or hasn't been changed. The plastic gears will and have all failed over time.
They were replaced under warranty when they failed up until 2009, now your on your own for the repair.

Is it a big job to change the gear.
The oil sight window is in front of the bulge. So a 98.is that right.

Sorry I just noticed you said its a 98, its the 99's that had the plastic gear, and they were all the green bikes. Hopefully you have the steel gear, as it was only the 99's that came with the plastic gear.
However if it was me, I may want to verify that for sure by taking a look. Replacing it is a big job, you can use a "Judges oil gear" that is a lot less work but its still a fair job.
Check Gadgets Fixit Sight, there is a good article there on the oil gear.

Hello mate, the 1998 was a G1 and had did not have the P.O.G, the 1999 was the G2 in Europe, but called the G1A in the U.S.A and did have it.

In the US there were no 98 models. You have a 99 with an early build date.

The POG was used in all of this style engine from 96 (I believe) until 2000 saw them replaced with a SOG.

The 99 red/red models had the POG also.

It's a fairly easy swap if you use a JOG, Judges Oil Gear.

If you want to use a Kawa SOG, you have to split the cases.

Pull the right side cover and look behind the clutch, if you see a composite gear start deciding what you want to replace it with.

They usually fail when the bike hits the mid 20000 mile mark.

There is a big VROC rally coming up in Solvang soon. You could probably find someone to help you at the rally. http://wcvroc.com/ Drop by and introduce yourself and tell them I sent you.

Just make sure you check real soon to see what gear you have in there, with any luck someone has already replaced it.

I have a red 99 G1A that was built 10/98 according to the sticker. I had a TXVROC friend pull the RH cover off and we found the dreaded POG Iinside. The gasket I ordered was the wrong size due to the oil sight glass being in a different location than the G1. Make sure you get the right gasket for your particular bike if you pull the cover. I'm no motorhead and I'm not paying a Kaw dealer $2500. so I've got s lot of schooling to do. I have heard on several occasions that the Judges gear has failed.

There lies the problem of ,is it a 1998 or a 1999, is it a GI,G1A or a G2, i cant find out, Kawasaki recalled these bikes in America because that was the market that they wanted to get a go at, we in England (europe)got shafted when you blokes got a recall on it, we were not theyre key market so we could fuck off as far as they were concerened, thats when they caused the confusion with the model number differences between the U.S.A and the rest of us, so that they could claim that our bikes were imported , and the warranty was fucked. where is that little c--t with the bullshit flag when i need him.

You probably have a POG. Mine is a G1 and it did. I tried a JOG but it failed because I did not apply the loctite correctly. Luckly there was no damage to the engine. I purchased a steel gear for Kawi and repaired it myself and the cost of the gear and gaskets was actually about the same cost as a JOG. Its a big job though as you need to remove and completely disassemble the engine including splitting the cases. These clutch cover images will help you determine your model.

If the oil sight glass is in the clutch cover it is a G1A if it is in the engine case under the clutch cover it is a G1. Mine is a G1 and I also had a JOG failure after almost 10,000 miles on it. If you do a JOG make sure you follow his instructions to the letter. We couldn't figure out why mine failed but we did find the flat head screws that hold it together in pieces.
