Motorcyclist in Ahwatukee collision dies from his injuries

By Cecilia Chan The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team

A motorcyclist who collided with a vehicle in Ahwatukee has died of his injuries, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Kirk Jarvis, 43, who was wearing a helmet, died at a local hospital, police spokesman Tommy Thompson said.
The collision occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday when a 61-year-old woman in a 2007 Audi failed to yield at a stop sign on southbound 17th Avenue, Thompson said.
The Audi collided with Jarvis, who was headed west on Pecos Road on a 20005 Suzuki motorcycle, Thompson said.
The unnamed woman was not injured.
Thompson said the investigation was still on-going and that there were no indications of impairment.

I think this may be the third fatality this week. Keep on your toes out there, folks.

We've had 2 here this week too. 96 year old turned left in front of a couple, killed the rider, pillion is in critical condition. Why a 96 year old is driving is beyond me.

The other (40ish) rider was on a brand new HD and got run over by a 20something...they are investigating that one. He was stopped to turn left and sounded like he got rear ended.

I guess Arizona will be a dangerous place for motorcycles in about 18,000 years. Glad I won't be around for it. Thanks for the heads up, Mr. Fortune Teller.

Scott, along with the rest of us down here always assume they never even knew we were on the road. We have wide streets and the speed limits average 45mph. Because everything is flat and long distances between lights people drive 50 to 55mph. Unless it is a motor cop you don't have to worry about speeding tickets unlike the rest of the country. Nobody pays attention especially during the winter when the snowbirds are here.

When my son turned 16 he did not want to get a driver's license. A couple of other young people I know said the same thing. They just didn't want to deal with the madness. We finally talked him into getting a license when he was 18, even then it was a couple of years before he did much driving.

The lame excuses down here are worse than the "I didn't see the motorcycle." I got tired of waiting so I pulled out. Well they should have known to stop for me. I'm in a hurry. Even after the accident, look I can't be waiting around, I have other things to do.

One of the motor cops down here wrote several hundred dollars in tickets to a driver in a motor home after an accident. The guy was broadsided and was furious this person ran into him. After all he signaled for the turn. Six lane road, motor home in the far right hand lane, signaled for a right hand turn, and turned left across six lanes of traffic. Every time the guy opened his mouth the cop wrote another ticket. The motor cop had seen the whole thing and if hadn't been for the light he had stopped at the cop would have most likely been the victim.

What Scott has pointed out many times down here is people get a slap on the wrist. Wouldn't want to hurt your feelings by convicting you over injuring or killing a biker.

There is guy here in Delaware in critical condition after losing control of his 2013 Harley at 3:30 in the morning. He was not wearing a helmet.

I also read about an older female driver who hit and killed a guy on a bicycle, didn't stop, and then t-boned a car several miles down the road and killed either the driver or passenger. This happened in Mesa in the past couple of days.

I can say it's a little nerve wracking riding in traffic. Going home seems to be worse. I swear that there are a lot of people out there driving drunk, stoned or over medicated. Unfortunately, I only have one reasonable route to go back and forth to work.

With only one main road and the interstate as options for coming to work, I am stuck on the one option also. I have modified my work hours where I ride in between 5 and 6 am and leave between 4 and 5 pm so I avoid most cagers. We also upgraded helmets, boots, and added chaps this month. Too many crazies out there. Not sure what we will be wearing when it hits 99 this summer and the leather is in the closet. Be careful out there.

I ride 15 miles one way to work every day. Thankfully, most of it is freeway driving. City streets scare the crap out of me. Just last night I was riding home and had a driver make a left turn in front of me. I had to lean hard on the front brake to avoid hitting him! Fortunately, I was riding next to a metro cop who promptly pulled him over. I'm guessing drivers making left hand turns and rear end collisions are the most prevalent dangers for us out there. I always try to assume that drivers are going to do something stupid. Ride safely, everyone!

Recently put a headlight modulator on. I was coming home from work through town, typical five-lane with the dedicated turn in the middle. I had the headlight on low beam so as to not annoy the cagers in front of me. I'm watching a car coming quickly, pop over into the turn lane, and I see the wheels start turning left. I flipped the headlight onto high, guess she saw me then, as she snapped back into the center lane and slammed on the brakes. Anything I can do to get them to see me!

Closest call i have had this year was by some guy on a customer chopper riding like and idiot. Going through town on the highway, the far right lane merges into the two left lanes, and immediately after the merge is the right turn onto my street. Was following my wife in her tahoe (i was on my nomad) and people on the right were slowly merging (traffic was heavy and going about 40mph). This guy comes flying up passing everyone on the right (right side of the lane that was ending) as i was going into my right turn to my street. I was signaling and my wife had her signal on. i don't think he even saw us until he came around the last car. He was really moving (don't know why, there was no way to pass the three miles of cars creeping down the highway. Anyway, i noticed him right before he locked up his rear brake. He didn't drop the bike, or even stop. Made sure he gave us all the one finger wave though. I'm guessing it was his telling us his I.Q. If we had gone down in that traffic who knows what would have happened. I like speed, but there is a time and a place, and that wasn't it.

I'm heading down the back street behind a shopping mall, one car is at a stop sign waiting to make a left turn. It's a middle age woman, I'm only doing about 30. We make eye contact, I'm continuing straight, then , suddenly she pulls out right in front of me, like she is actually aiming for me. I have to hammer on the brakes which almost launch me over the handle bars. She carries on ... like " so what". Man .. I wish I could mount a rocket launcher!!
