Head pipe gaskets

I'm getting ready to install a Cobra exhaust on my Nomad this friday/saturday and I picked up 2 crushable gaskets. Has anyone ever put a high temp gasket sealer lightly on both sides to make the seal even more complete?

Just wondering if anyone has and what the results were and/or not worth it as the gaskets seal fine by themselves.

I did, but just to hold the gaskets in place. I could not handle the two part clamp and position the exhaust on the studs without the darn gaskets falling out. I don't think it hurt any thing but I had to re torque the nuts after a couple hundred mile ride. I did use the Harley type gaskets and they were a tad small until crushed.

Every time I remove my exhaust, when I reinstall it, I use the permatex high temp gasket sealer (black) just to hold the gaskets in place (I've used both the Kawasaki and HD gaskets), and when I remove the head pipes, the sealer is burnt off and just a little white powdery residue remains. It just wipes right off.

I had my sons help about a month ago, all those fingers got the
job done, without a sealant. It would be much easier with some
on there. Good Luck.

Luck isn't part of the equation Gerry. Just wondering if anyone did this for a better seal.

Apology accepted. Your penance is to start 10 totally worthless threads within the next few days.

If you're having trouble keeping the gasket in place without sealant, break a popsicle stick in half (length ways) then cut it to fit the opening. Tie some dental floss around it with enough length to get to the end of the head pipe. The popsicle stick holds the gasket in place and once you have the head pipe in place, a sharp tug on the floss should break the popsicle stick so you can pull it out the other end of the head pipe. Obviously this wouldn't work if you have cats in the head pipes. This is great if you don't have any sealant handy and can't see a trip to the store just to buy something you might not use much of. This took longer to type than it would to actually do.
