Dunlop and Bridgestone seem to be the most popular. I have the Bridgestone Turanza 195-60-16 and love it. It's smooth, handles great, and hardly looks used after a year and a half of riding.

I have the Bridgestone Potenza G 109. It has a little more "edge" in corners, but the traction is incredible. I routinely drag the boards if I don't think about it. I try not to drag the boards, but sometimes forget and get a little aggressive. It's easy to do. I got caught in a really bad downpour on my way home tonight and the wet weather grip was great. As a side note. I run a cobra upfront and both are balanced with dyna-beads.

The Goodyear Triple Tread (Tred?) is popular, too.

If you look around you can find a CT tall enough to correct the speedometer error. If you go with a tire with a low profile you will agravate the error. A couple of us on here run Continental Vanco-8 light truck tires in 185/75-16. This tire has a tall enough aspect ratio that it corrects the speedometer error. It is also a great tire in the twisties.

I run the Bridgestone Turanza EL-400 on my 2001. The size is 185/65/16. I have about 10,000 miles on it and it still looks new. I use dyna beads for balancing. Smooooooth. On the front i'm running a Bridgestone Exedra Max 150/80R16.

Is the wheel on a 99 Nomad wide enough for a car tire??

I tried that tire, after 3,000 miles I threw it away and put a Bridgestone touranza 195-60-R16 on it. Love the brigdestone time to replace it this winter the tread is getting thin.
The problem with the vanco 2 is it's a load range D truck tire, it's heavy and NOT very flexible side walls. I tried tire pressure as low as 24 and in 2 lb increments to 35 psi it just would not handle very well. Too darn heavy and stiff. If memory serves it is a 6 ply tire. Six ply tread area and 4 ply sidewall. My Nomad was just plain squirrely with that tire.

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/pr...genhv5.ang.jpg Click that very top link for some useful info... I dont recommend nor not recommend the General Gmax... 195/55/16.. I would really like for someone else to try it with me and see what they think of it... :) My bike has 30K and havent had the shaft maintenance done and that could be some of my not so sure issues... My issue is it feels like the rear end has some trailering effect... At interstate speeds it feels like the rear can get squirmy with a little back and forth sterring/ countersteering.. Almost like atrailer on the rear of a car, like it just wants to wander... But at 55-65 its ok... Thats my tire/bike... again havent had the shaft maintenace probably ever done... But previous owner may have... but I doubt it.. The tire has a very nice tread pattern and is available at Discounttire.com or Tirerack $98 shipped... The tire has a Vrating.. and treadwear is alittle lower at around 480... To me that means more of a softer compund which to me, means a better grip for a motorcycle... The 55 will lower your bike some and throw your speedo off about 6-7MPH... Fuel efficiency will remain about the same.. So I would recommend haveing that rear shaft maintenance done with any tire... Also I only have about 250miles on the tire.. SO it may wear into play.. And I may not have found my sweet spot. Greg

Greg, bring the rear pressure up a couple of pounds. Mine would act like that on the highway and a couple pounds of air helped significantly. Also by running the 55 series you have lowered the back of the bike even more, throwing off the geometry. If you have adjustable rear shocks try raising the rear a little, or try a 130/90 on the front to correct the angles.
Bring it up to CLT sometime. MT
