99 Nomad clutch spring upgrade ?

I have a '99 Nomad 1500 carbed sled- it has 61,000 m on it ; last 2,500 belong to me. The other day after giving the greenhornet a bath, i was going to put it back in garage for wax & neverdull chrome. After 4 min at idle , i exercised clutch - put it first notch - 2/3 way out on lever still not moving. Backfired & died (first time ever) . On 3rd attempt , lever full out and turnin' 2 grand --- it finally pulled itself back inside. I dont think anything has ever been done to clutch , also i have not felt/noticed any type slip or hesitation through the gears. Can i use the clutch spring for Meanstreak part # 92145-1449 on the 99 1500 , as described on gadgetsfxitpg. ?? Also, pro's & cons or anything else that might clarify this problem. Also want to use Judges washers if i can reach him via e-mail. Thanks to all in advance !

Yes use that part #... someone posted a link to a site that handles the washers for Bob. I'll try to find it.

Use the Meanstreak spring pn as mentioned, and Judges washers will help also.
Probably wouldn't hurt to change the brake fluid in the clutch system also.

Mine is a 2000 carbed Nomad and I used a 2003 Meanstreak spring in it. Works great.

That's real strange, since you didn't notice any slipping in the high gears. It almost never happens that you don't find the high gears slipping first, long before you would notice in 1st.

Thats why I suggested changing the fluid as well, it may not be getting full travel through the slave cylinder.

Ring he threw the slave forward, and it actted like it didn't let go when he did. Odd... I agree new fluid, but I wonder if the rubber flex lines are buggered and have internal leaks, hanging chads, stopping the release action.

It is very unusual to have slipping in 1st, and not in 4th or 5th gear.

Old flex lines can suffer internal leaks in the rubber line, and constrict, and if that happens the slave will be pushed out in a normal way, but it won't return.

I have seen this on older vehicals of many types, usually in brake lines. The flex hoses blister up and appear all lumpy.

But then almost always the flex lines are older than 20 years old. The only time I have seen a new vehical this way was last year doing a major major major 4 wheel brak job on a 2000 Chevy 4x4 pick up. On that every steel line there is was replaced, every flex line was dead, the rear backing plates were dsut, and the rear axel filler plug was rusted to the point it could never be taken out, and I drilled the pumpkin cover and made a fitting for a new filler plug.

Obviously this was more than any normal brake job, and because that truck was illegally sold after katrina. That thing sat in water to the frame a long time and it sat in the same water at a lower level again making 2 clear water lines which proved it to me.

What ever the cause is on this bike I can't know, but I suspect a bad flex line fer sartin!

Thats what I suspected as well mac, It could also be some of that black crud from the flex lines gooing things up in there as well.
It probably does slip in 4th &5th gear, he may just not notice, especially if he's on a lot of flat ground.

I did Judges oil gear and meanstreak spring on my bike this spring. It has made a big difference in the feel of the clutch and you can tell it is hooking up better. Didn't add the washers but don't think I needed them.
