Today i went to the local Kaw dealer and checked my ticket to win ticket. Won 10% off next service. While there i decided to get prices on tires. What a mistake!! Set of avon cobras $665. Yea right. I asked if they would match prices and said yes. So i told them $349 to my door. They said that is less than they pay for them. What a surprise! Now for the real funny part. $288 to instal front and rear tire. I asked why so high and he said-- have to remove the seat, exhaust, rear bar behind wheel, chrome peices between bags and fender, bags, pull out driveshaft, rear saddle bag guards. Of coursed i laughed and said he was crazy. I told him i have rear tires changed before and most of that stuff has nothing to do with a rear tire change. of course i have never in the past and never will in the future deal with these idiots. i'm glad there is an independent m/c shop that does good work nearby.

Never use a dealer for any type service in my opinion. They are way out of line on prices they charge.

Not the price so much as everything they think has to come off the bike to change rear tire. Checked my fore head when i left the dealer and SUCKER wasn't printed on it.

Run the other way. Remove the chrome filler strips and driveshaft to replace a rear tire? Has this place ever replaced a rear tire on a Nomad? I wouldn't let these boneheads within 50 feet of my bike.

cactus, this dealer is known for screwing people. On their bikes they wont come off msrp and trade in is really low. The only reason they don't go out of business is they are part of a larger company. As far as parts removal on my bike i couldn't tell if he really thought that or if he thought i just didn't know which is probably the case with a lot of people.

Man that is a rip. This sounds like one of the dealers that give the decent ones a bad rep. Yes there are some decent ones.

If I remove the bags (5 min job) I can have my rear tire changed for $35. I also just found out there is another dealer will do it in town for $16. Neither one requires you buy the tire from them but they will price match so that is where I buy.

I think it is important to the MC community that we do reviews (especially through Google) on the good and bad dealers....it will eventually impact them.

As far as not letting anyone work on your bike that is fine for everyone that has the time, knowledge, facility, tools, and desire. But not everyone has all these.

I do what I can but when it gets beyond my resources/desire it makes more sense to write a check. It is just like any service you enlist....you need to check them out which is pretty easy these days.

I was lookin' to buy a Cobra for my rear tire. Dennis Kirk catalog 2011 edition, $178, Tried to order on line, $228.
Called, asked why. That tire has had three price raises in the last month ???
Called dealer, how much for same tire, $245, how much to install,$35.
How much to install if i buy on line,$75.
So if I buy on line total cost installed would be $303
Buy and installed by dealer, $280.
Asked why so much to install if I buy on line, he says"You don't go to Walmart and buy a dozen eggs and take them to a dinner and ask them to cook them for you do you?"
I know,I know, do it myself for free. Not happenin' I do what maintainance I feel comfortable doing, Tire change is not one of those things.

Yes. Other than the initial "break in" service, I don't plan to let the HD techs work on my new one.

I take my wheels off the bike and take them to the local guy that has good prices on tires.
He charges me $20 to install and balance the tires if I buy the tires there.

I just got my new Cobras delivered yesterday and with the rebate, both tires were $275. A local shop quoted me 1.5 hours at $65 per hour for the install and that's just handing over the bike.

How will that work-out with your warranty?

Unless of course you are only speaking of fluid, tire, and other "wearable" changes -- which is allowable. Just wondering. I believe mine has to have some work done only by a certified tech to remain valid. I am going to re-read it to make sure; but let me know what you know.
