Storm in the desert

As I write this, there is a storm rolling through my area. There is a large thunderstorm cell moving in here. It starts with wind, then a huge wall of dust, followed by lighting, thunder and (usually) brief, but heavy rain.

When this started, it was over 100° here, in just a few minutes it's dropped to 93°. Just 1/4 mile south of my neighborhood is miles and miles of open desert, so the dust really blows out here.

This is a picture looking across the street, taken from our laundry room window.

This is looking down my street to the west:

Looking to the southwest, where the storm is moving in from:

Looking north, above my house:

Yeah, it rained pretty good, probably .5" or so. I just stepped outside, it's not raining anymore and it's pretty windy. Cooled down real nice, too.

This is all the weather we get here, and it's very infrequent, so it's a big deal when we have something other than sunshine.

Storm in the desert

Great pictures Scott, thanks for posting. Doesn't take a lot of rain in Arizona to flood. I remember driving through in an 18 wheeler and went through a big storm like that. There was water standing everywhere.

Now tell us what a cool down is in AZ. At 2:30 Sunday your local time its a crisp 105 fall afternoon. :)

Perfect football weather. Hopefully this will be the last week of 100°+ heat. They are predicting it will be in the mid-90's by the weekend. After that storm rolled through last evening, it cooled down by a good 20 degrees.

They had a bye week. Next week, they play Iowa State. More importantly, BYU lost to USU.

Very perceptive Mac. Yes, it frequently rains mud out here in the West. Arizona, Idaho, etc. Hard to keep windows clean.

You get the dust, which covers everything, then the rain comes and turns it to mud. If you get enough rain, it pretty much cleans everything off. I've never seen it rain "brown", but there is an awful lot of dust in the air when one of these comes through. Thankfully, the rain cleans up the air. In those pictures I posted, the sky had pretty much turned red/brown which is why the photos appear tinted.

The pics remind me of sepiatone olde tyme pics. I have never been in any sort of dust storms.

So I have no idea what that's like. I would be scared in a first time for me dust storm, not knowing what to expect.

When I first moved down here, I worked on the 6th floor of a building that had an endless view to the southeast. It was really cool to see a wall of dust 15 miles across and a few thousand feet high moving across the valley.
