$3000 Nomad? - HD Demo Ride

The local HD dealer had the factory Demo Ride truck this weekend (BBQ, Music,...) and you could sign up to ride a dozen different bikes. Well, I didn't sign-up, but I did BS with the HD salesman and told him that I had an old rusty metric cruiser that I might be willing to trade as a down (hehe), on a $21,000 Ultra Classic.... I was offered the meager sum of $3000.00 for my Nomad! I showed him the business card from my local Kawa dealer who's sales manager just recently did a Retail Value on my Nomad for $6500.00 -$7000.00. I know Wholesale and Retail are different stories, but I'm reminded of what many here say " I ride a Nomad because I choose too ".

Don't take it personally. The HD dealer may not know the market for the Nad well and that dealer may want to wholesale it off their lot anyway rather than trying to sell the trade at their dealership.

I tried that up here with the local HD and did far better consigning my Vol at the Yamaha dealer I bought it from.

I would agree with Hammer on this one.

I wouldn't necessarily think the dealer's offer was a reflection of his opinion on the bike; but rather their ability to sell the bike.

A ridiculously low trade-in offer is simply telling you they are not interested in buying it and you are better-off selling it outright.

I received a reasonable trade-in price on mine because the dealer knew he could sell the bike fast; and did in less than a week for $500 more than my trade-in. I would imagine if he didn't think he could sell it, I would not have been offered nearly as much.

Just my two cents... ;)

If your bike has a value of $6500, nobody who resells used bikes is going to offer you that much for it. They will offer less, intending to sell the used bike for $6500-$7000. It's called "making a profit", and it's how they remain in business. So don't take what the HD salesman told you personally.

When I was looking to trade my 2005 Suzuki C50T in for a Nomad, I went to two different Kawasaki dealers. The dealer in Phoenix offered me $5300 in trade, the dealer in Mesa offered me $2900. Who do you think got my business?

A guy at work bought a nice older Goldwing at the local HD shop for $1500. At a Honda shop it would have been priced for twice that.

Most any dealer will try and low ball you,, If you ever decide to treade check Kelly Blue Book. Loook up the wholesale and retail price,, work from there,,,,,
I picked up my Nomad from a HD dealership Nov. a few years ago..Got it for 2900.00$ under book, Basicly trade in price :)
Pays to buy a Metric from a HD Dealer just before the snow flies :)
MostHD dealers up here will wholesale the Metrics off to other dealrs rather then sell them....But if timed right you can score :)

one thing about NADA pricing is that it is sponsored by the dealers. Thus, retails are higher than warranted and wholesale values are less..
The local harley dealer wholesales every one his metric tradeins to metric dealers..

1) Yes, I bought my Nomad 3 years ago from an HD dealer in Seattle
2) Yes, the HD dealer told they usually wholesale metrics within 2 weeks time.
3) I agree with "bokobob", NADA is not favorable to consumers.

If you know a dealer that you "trust" locally, you can often do better consigning your bike for sale. There is less hassle, no tire kickers or worse calling on your ad and it works for both seller and you. I have done that a few times and it worked well for me.

When I consigned my 2003 VOL I got more than I expected "net" within 3 weeks.

Bob and Randy THANKs Im really like the new look with the Fairing :)

I dont take NADA or Kelly Blue book at 100% face value.I only use it as a guide to work with. On bikes or cars. as far as I know thats all we non dealers have ... BUT IMO you would get a better trade in at a Kaw dealer ,just like a Ford at a Ford deaaler..BUT some GREAT deals have come out od HDdealerships when their $$$ are tight and the have inventory to move...
If the trade in deal is not the $$$ amout wanted, Most dealers will add perks,, IE Chrome goodies and Extended warrenty.. LOW $$$ items for them, High $$ profit.so they can give some things away to add to your trade in,,They feel like they got a low $$$ trade in w/min profit loss. WIN WIN

ALSO HD has A GREAT extended warrenty do not seen to break balls like Ma Kaw

$3000 Nomad? - HD Demo Ride

Don't feel bad, two years ago I had a Honda Sabre and was looking at a used V-Strom at a H/D dealership. Salesman asked if I had a trade and I said yes, it's a Honda Sabre. Realizing it was an older discontinued model metric he shook his head and said sorry, can't take a bike like that in trade. He didn't even want to come outside and look at it. So just to be fair, I decided to look elsewhere for a used bike and didn't buy there.
