ran over dog

a local group of riders were out 2 weekends ago and one of the riders in the middle of the pack ran over a midsize dog that just ran out onto the road . the rider ahead saw the dog coming and tried to signal the guys behind but it all happened too fast .
tha bike and rider took a bad tumble ...rider was scrapped and bruised but ok and the bike(2004 harley) was a total wreck.
it sent the local riders on a fact finding mission on animal whistles on vehicles and the concensus by the so called specialists!!!! is that they don't work after conducting tests on deer, moose, dogs etc in captivity.....seems like the animals had no reaction at all to the whistles....who knows

I think the whistles just give a false sense of security. I've never seen any documented evidence that they do any good.

Glad the rider wasn't hurt worse.

I've read some stuff that says the whistles actually do more harm then good. The animals hear the noise, but don't recognize it as a threat or hazard, so they try to get closer to the sound to investigate.

I've actually seen 4 full size pick up truck that had hit deer/moose and all of them had those fancy looking whistle ???

All the whistle stay on with that 2 way tape when they had the collision but did not seem to do anything for animals.

I actually prefer a Loud horn or pipes to scare them off

That would be quite a scare, and a lousy way to wreck your bike.
At least the rider came out not too bad.

ran over dog

this just happened to my buddy. a golden ran out in the road as he was going by. Started barking and running after him, so luckly (if there is such a thing) he saw it coming and could brace for it. Golden got wedged between crash bar and front wheel and he was able to keep the bike upright and skid to a stop. Golden, unfortunately, was not so lucky! As far as the whistles. they were big in the 80's right? before I was driving. someone made some millions but I heard as well that they didn't do the task at hand. Glad the one here wasn't hurt worse!

I have an electronic deer alert from Hornet. You can also get them from a HD dealer. I got mine off the internet from Hornet. I think I paid $69.00 for it. It mounts on the crash bar at a 45 degree angle to the ground and wires into the bike's electrical system through a switch. The alert emits a very high frequency sound that animals can hear up to 400 feet ahead. I can't say for a FACT that they actually work, but I can say that they seem to. Recently, on a ride, we encountered quite a few deer and elk. I had the Hornet going, and every time I got close, the critters seemed to freeze in place until we got past them. The elk, in one case, actually turned tail and ran back uphill away from me.

Do they really work? I dunno, but perhaps it's one of those things that if you think they work, they do, and if you think they don't, they don't. I do know that they are 100% effective at keeping elephants away in North America. In all seriousness, I think the electronic ones work better than the stick on type that require you to be going at least 35 mph before they "whistle."

ran over dog

I had a similar experience back in 1984 or so. Riding from Mississippi to Kansas solo and two dogs on right side of road. The larger of the two crossed in front of me. I had slowed to around 50 and the dog that had crossed in front of me returned to join his buddy. His mistake, and the last one he made. I braced and held the handlebars as tightly as possible. Ran right over the center of the dog. I kept going but the dog didn't. Luckily I was on a 1983 Goldwing and with the weight I just went over his mid section. It jarred the heck out of my wrists but the bike stayed straight and true. I circled back but there was nothing I could do for the dog. I still count my blessings today.

I had a dog run out in front of me one time, but I was able to dodge it.

Sorry to hear about the HD and your friend. Glad it wasn't any worse than it was.

I ran over a chicken about 3 years ago. We'll never know why she crossed the road, but she didn't make it to the other side. :)

Thump-thump, and it was all over.

It seems likely that the rider in question locked up the brakes like in the Cop video in the safety forum. 900lbs or bike and rider going over a 50lb dog shouldn't do much more then scare the hell out of you. But if you did grab too much brake, that'll put you down pretty easy.

Don't know, just trying to logic through it.

ran over dog

Back in the 60's My buddy and I were riding our 650 BSA's and a dog ran out to chase him and went directly in front of me. I knew I was going to hit it so I hit the gas to take the load off the front wheel. He felt like I hit a speed bump but I heard his back crack as I went over him. I stopped and looked back to see he wasn't moving. The owner was in the front yard so i didn't figure I needed to tell him I hit is dog ;). I just rode on.

Yesterday morning I hit an animal for the first time ever on a bike. It was only a rabbit but I thank God it wasn't a moose! Of course, we don't have any moose in Georgia.

ran over dog

I was riding last year down roads nearby my home a group of wild turkeys came running across the road. As soon as I got to them on the bike they all took flight and one hit my fairing sending it back over my head. Without loosing control I continued on thinking I got through that fairly lucky, then all of a sudden the car that was following me turned out to be a trooper. Red lights flashing he pulled me over. I had no idea but the turkey I hit flew up over me and hit the troopers car in the windshield. What really surprised me was he wrote me a ticket. Like I had anything to do with the turkey hitting his car.

The moral to this story, Don't flip a police officer the bird!!!

ran over dog

Back in the mid 60s I ran over a medium size German Shepherd with my Honda 305 Dream. I had my roommate on the back and the two of us weighted a total of about 400 pounds. The dog didn't have a chance and we never lost control. The owner was pi$$ed at me for running over his dog, but I was more pi$$ed at him for allowing his dog to chase motorcycles.
