Final Drive Housing Temperature

Changed the gear oil yesterday using the 2X4 method so as to not overfill it and after my 50 mile ride today I was checking the back drain plug for any leaks and the housing was quite hot to the touch. Is this normal? I used the right oil so that's not a concern. Maybe it's just me, had a lot of car trouble this week so maybe I'm gun shy.
Thanks

Gears do run pretty warm. Lube helps cut friction, but there is tons of friction none the less.

The only probklem I have is I can't go test this and have felt up that gear box hot.

I am hoping later today to drop the battery in bolt things up and sneal out for a short ride.maybe...

Bluesman...I am a little confused? You indicated you used the 2 X 4 method? Do you mean you put a 2 X 4 under the kickstand?

If you did, it is my understanding that would overfill it...right? I thought we were so supposed to just leave it on the kickstand so we could not overfill it?

Yes, I put a couple of pieces of wood under the kickstand to raise it a little. Not quite as high as a 2X4 and filled it to the back of the threads. I don't believe I've over filled it. Read numerous threads on this subject and it seems some raise the bike some don't..............

the rear gears in the nomad are hypoid gears. these are very highload capability gears that have a very high sliding friction design. this is why they use such a heavy oil with a high zinc and phosphorous content. thats what makes the oil stink so bad. high temp from friction is perfectly normal. they will last forever if you take care of them. look how neglected auto differentials are and usually last the life of the car with no maintainance. automobile rearends will get so hot you can't touch them. bill

I use the 2x4 method never a problem or leak. Only fill it to the bottom of the fill hole where the threads start.

Schoeney, if you fill it with the bike level you run the risk of overfilling the rear drive. By placing it on the flat side of the 2X4 you will not overfill. If you leave it on the kickstand you possibly might not get enough rear oil in it. You don't want to overfill but get as close to that point as possible without overfilling, hence the flat side of the 2X4.

As for the rear end getting hot, yes there will be some heat there. As others have mentioned it sits right beside the exhaust plus the oil circulates through the rear end and those parts get hot so the oil gets hot and it will be hot to the touch.
