Dumb move of the week

I was doing an oil change today on the bike and got it all put together, maybe 20 minutes or so, and was putting the tools away when I noticed an O ring laying on the oil catch basin...duh! So, I had to fashion an oil catch basin from my now empty oil container, unscrew the screen as the new oil flowed out, put on the oil ring and get it all back together. What a mess and a PITA.

So what was learned from this? Always make sure all the parts are reinstalled before adding the oil.

Have a great rest of your Thanksgiving. I worked off a piece of sweet potato pie so I think I'll have another to celebrate my stupidity. ::)

No harm, no foul! You'll check for the o-ring next time, I'll bet.

Roger that. I even thought it looked funny when I was putting the plug back in.

That's ok. Maybe you flushed something out that could have caused a bearing problem later on.

Coach, been there....done that except with the drain plug on the final drive case. Noticed it in the bottom of the pan after pouring the 6 ozs of old gear oil out. Mine was much easier though being able to "plug the dike" with the end of one finger while putting the little gasket on the plug.

Coach,
You can lean the bike over on its right crashbars and remove the screened oil plug without losing any oil at all.
Don't ask how I know

I'll have to remember that move next time. I'll put that in my "What to do when you screw up to make it all better" file... ;)

That's handy to know... So far I haven't yet pulled this stunt.. I did wonder if this might work as I read the thread....

I still gocha beat from when I put my gas tank back on and didn't connect the fuel line back together. I turned the ignition switch and waited for the whine to quit, and all the time gas was blowing down my leg, filling up my boot, and flooded the garage. ::) :-/

Folks have ask from time to time on this forum "Will gas leak if you disconnect the line at the tank?" My answer is "Bet your azz it will if you leave the electrical connectors connected and turn the FRIGGIN' IGNITION SWITCH ON! damit

I'd lie to nominate myself for this award! Just changed the oil this morning, and noticed that my drip pan was almost full because I had neglected to insert the drain plug back into the oil pan. CRAP!! Back up to Wally World for another gallon on Shell Rotella Synthetic, at least I know its REALLY clean! $45.00 oil change...priceless!
