Ok gearheads, figure this one out

My baby is fubar. How do I know this? Because she's currently in the shop waiting for the warranty company to decide what to do. Here's the background:

Last weekend I was with the other South Central folks on some rides and suddenly I lost 4th gear. Yes, 4th. Nada, nothing. Also, my other gears were grinding considerably. I made it home and took her to the dealership and here is what they told me today. The Cases are damaged. The tabs on the shift star are broken so the bearing is going all the way through and hitting the cases.

Now, this is about the extent of the info I have right now, so if you have questions, I'll try to answer but I don't have much more. How could this have happened? I changed the oil and all of the fluids were fine, but this doesn't sound like a fluid problem.

So, what are your thoughts?

This should confirm whether the extended warranty is worth purchasing to those that are contemplating the decision whether to buy it or not. I surely hope it all works out in your favor. I have a gut feeling that it will. Good luck Jeff.

I really don't know how that wold have happened unless someone stomped on the shifter a few times in the past and possibly bent something inside, or a poor case casting just let go inside because of a casting flaw. Whatever the reason is I hope your warranty covers it since its probably a hefty repair bill. Transmissions are usually pretty rugged, and unless severly abused it takes a lot to break them.

It's your big clumbsy foot resting on the shift lever as you drive...

Did you do any work on the clutch in the past? Change out the spring or install Judges washers?

It sounds like someone (past or present) has been heavy footed with the gear changes. That could be a problem for you on warranty, as if they can reasonably prove that the part is "damaged" rather than "defective" they could decline to pay.

If its the crankcases that are damaged, then the bill will run into 1000's of dollars as they are only sold in matched pairs, and the labour hours are huge.

hope it works out for you, but you might want to start looking for a spare motor just in case. :'(

Fluke maybe.. I can't really get it figured what you said, but I get the idea a shaft dropped due to bad bearings, and allowed many gears to be in semi lock at the same time, which basicly turns the tranny into a metal grinder.

You are more going for new cases with all new parts, in other words a new engine and case.

Be ready to show receipts and dates of service even if you did it for oil changes.

Just thought of something else; did you put antifreeze in the crankcase too??

Regarding all of your useless comments, I want you to know that there is a very special place in hell reserved just for you. I promise I have invited a select group to torture you for eternity.

As for the other questions/comments. I've been the only rider and have been gentle with shifting, keeping my big feet off the shifter. I've made sure to change fluids and have taken her in to the same dealer for any problem because I wanted to have that service paper trail.

Wantakaw, its an 05 with 41k miles and this does seem to be unique situation as oldbikers so eloquently put it, sh*t happens.

As for the crash diet, if you've seen me, I truly am a poster child for beating anorexia.

Worthless comments?

My comments are worth their weight in GOLD!!!

Remember I road into Custer with you and if there was ever a poster child for a sloppy shifting clumbsy footed Nomad rider beating anorexia with a triple cheesberger in each hand, YOU BE DA MAN JEFF!!

Seriously until they pull it down and see wear marks and where they are located your not going to know and even after you still might not know why. I've blown quite a few gears in drag racing and was never sure why they broke other than the horsepower we put them through was about triple what they were suppose to handle.
