Close friend crash pics: Final Update

A very good friend was involved in a head on collision on his way to work this morning. An oncoming vehicle hit a pool of water on LA State Hwy 308 and began hydroplaning. He struck Jim, who was in his company owned pickup truck. The guy in the other vehicle died instantly. Jim has several broken ribs, broken shoulder, broken leg, crushed ankle, and the most serious is a torn aorta. He is not stable enough for surgery at this time but needs it soon to repair the aorta. He is bleeding internally from more places than the aorta. He is 72 years old and in great shape for his age. He is also one heck of a great guy who loves God and his family.

Jim Collinson is in ICU tonight. He will have surgery in the morning to repair his ankle and hip. Both have multiple fractures. The anathesiologist performed an epidural for a short and quick pipeline for the pain medication. His breathing has improved since he is not feeling as much pain. I'll update his condition after the surgery tomorrow. Thanks for all of the prayers and best wishes.

I spoke with Jim's wife a few minutes ago and she stated that the temporary repairs on his hip and ankle went well this morning. His kidney functions have stabilized as has his heart. He has been having a pacemaker for over a year. The extent of his injuries were a tear in his aorta, five broken ribs that were completely detached from the breast bone, bruised lung, broken pelvis, fractured kneecap, and crushed ankle. The permanent repairs to his ankle and hip will need to be done at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans as soon as he is able to be transported there. I will visit him in ICU this afternoon at 5 pm. Jim is a strong old boy having played league softball until just a few years ago. Barring any serious complications, he should pull out of this. It will just take a while. Again, thanks for all the prayers and support.

Just visited Jim in ICU. He's slowly but steadily improving. He's got more iron protruding from his legs than he could carry. Pelvis in traction and ankle all bolted together. He's got a great sense of humor and was joking around with me as groggy as he was on the meds.
I went to the wrecking yard where his truck was towed and was able to see it through one of the windows. It is unbelievalbe that he is alive. The front of that Chevy Silverado is only 1 - 2 feet beyond the windshield. Everything that was up front was pushed into the cab. He is very fortunate to be alive. I'll try to take a picture of the truck tomorrow and post it. You will not be able to comprehend how he survived this accident. Only by the grace of God.
