Going Darkside

Today I picked up my new Dunlop SP5000 195/60/16! I ordered it from WallyWorld with no problems. Ordered the Dyna Beads tonight. Wish me luck on getting it mounted and all back together. BnG

Dave,

Good luck. Mine's sitting out in the garage, waiting for me to get time to tackle it.

That is a wide-ass upgrade, isn't it? (Only speaking of comparison to stock tire's horizontal dimension, of course)

Dave

I've heard different methods of installing Dyna beads.
I couldn't get the through the valve stem method to work very well.
I mount the tire and seat both beads.
Then I break one bead and shove a funnel between the tire and rim and dump in the beads.

Good luck
Mike

I have a piece of clear vinyl hose about 12 inches long. The diameter is sized to fit snugly over the end of a valve stem. I remove the valve stem, slip on the hose and then have a small funnel in put in the end of the hose. I pour 2 oz of dynabeads in, which almost fills the hose. Then I tap the valve stem with a wrench and the beads start flowing in. They sort of trickle in at first and then they go in real quick. Reinsert the Schrader valve, inflate to the desired pressure, and I'm good to go. The entire operation takes maybe 2 minutes.

I usually do this with the wheel off the bike, after having a new tire mounted and before reinstalling the wheel on the bike.

Just wondering if any folks with the 1700 Nomad are running car tires.

Do they fit the stock rim and how does the bike handle.

I have a 205/65 CT on the back. It was a little squirrelly the first few days while wearing the release mold off, but now I don't even think about it.

By the way, anything bigger than a 205/65 will probably hit the swing arm. The 205 corrects the speedo error also.

I am running Dunlop 150/80-16 WWW on the front. It doesn't have an "R" in the size so I figure it is a bias ply tire. I replaced it after the stock Bridgestone took a roofing nail. I have about 15K on the Dunlop now and the tread is still good.

I have done a lot of research on different web sites, and decided that the c/t Dunlop 195/60/16 was the one for me. It is quite a bit wider than the ME880. I don't know the difference in height yet.

I haven't installed it yet..... been laid up with a bum left knee. Doc says he thinks I have a torn meniscus. To make sure, I have to go get an MRI before he repairs it. I think I tore it swinging my right leg over the Nomad seat and twisting my left knee at the same time. Very painful! Once I get this knee fixed, I'll be careful, you betcha!! BnG

I forgot to mention..... I didn't have Walmart mount the new tire. I figure if they were doing something a little out of the ordinary, they would mess up my wheel or tire or something. besides, I've got a local guy in my little town that will do it for me. BnG

Cost was $132.00 plus tax. No postage, etc. If you ever buy a tire online from Walmart, pick it up at the "Site to Store" desk, not the Tire and Lube section. The Tire Shop does not communicate with the "Site to Store" desk. I went through about 5 clerks before someone knew what I was talking about. After that, no problem. Dave

The Dunlop is 1.77" wider and .24" shorter than the stock size tire.

Try the size calculator, it can be fun.

Not sure how you came to these numbers, but the simple calculation is:

Stock 170/70-16
Dunlop 195/60-16

The width difference is 25mm or 1", the height is almost equal at 119mm vs 117mm or 2mm difference. So the tires gives you much more width while maintaining the OEM sidewall spec.
