It's a spring, with a hook at each end. There's a post on the sidestand arm and one on the frame. It doesn't get much easier than that.

With the sidestand extended, I use a pair of needle-nose vise grips and get a good bite on the spring and hook on both posts.

If it were me, I'd put the bike up on a stand and remove the sidestand arm and clean and lube the pivot bolt before attaching the spring.

Brute force is all it takes, just follow CJ's advice. And the oil really makes a difference in how they work. I just did mine yesterday.

I use Honda moly paste on it.

You would also check for excessive play on the pivot and check to see if the holes for the pivot bolt are elongated.

I use motor oil, I have to oil the stand 2-3 times a year.
If the spring is stretched to where it won't stay on, youll have to replace it.

If you don't have something similar to the chock in the link, get something.

As you know these bikes are heavy, be safe.

A few months ago a friend had her Drifter fall on her while she was trying to hold it and check the oil.

If you want to extend the spring before putting it on .. try putting one end in a vise .. bend it (side to side) to open up the rings and slip pennies in between several of them. Once on the pins in the stand and frame, pull out the pennies.

Some of us old guys have limited brute force ;)

She got lucky and just ha a few bruises. It could've been worse. My bike stays in the chock while it's in the garage.

Go find any car shop that does brakes - they should be able to borrow you a Brake spring tool - it takes more time to type this than to put the spring back on! Or go to a Harbor Freight store and spend 3 bucks on one.

Four tapcons into the concrete. It will not move. I've tried.
