Based on the phones I'd say you don't need a gps
You need a map.

LOL... I don't know about you, but sometimes my head just needs a break from all this technology and I just go "old school". I always have a Road Atlas in the trunk...

Exactly. I was looking into the idea of a basic GPS strictly to use as a replacement of the crappy speedometer. Maps work just fine for me. I am not among the "Desperately-In-Touch". I don't need to be in instant contact with everyone so I can tell them I went to the bathroom today or that I had pizza last night. Why, my wife and I actually talk to each other over dinner while we watch whole families not talking to each other as they eat. Sometimes we talk for hours! We don't text (phones are for talking), have no use for Facebook (did you ever really look at the garbage people think the world at large needs to know?). Phone calls don't interrupt us because we don't answer. So far I'm doing fine. And, maps are a heck of a lot cheaper than the latest whiz bang gizmo and all the desperately need programs.

Nice thoughts Tortuga, couldn't agree with you more, on all of it, I'm the only one I know without a stinking smart phone. Hell I'm having a tough time with this dam thing.

I bought a piece that takes the place of one of the nuts on fairing, it would work with a windshield also, that has the ball for my Garmin to mount to.

I just take the Garmin from my truck and use it on the bike.

My speedo doesn't light up enough to see it anymore, so the GPS is more for speedo than anything.

Garmin 2597LTM (Lifetime Maps)

Easy to use basic unit. $115-120

Most basic units have much more than I will ever need.

Has speed limit sign that changes to red when speeding (good feature).

Has Speedometer.

Ram mount X grip. Simple.

Like most GPS the screen is hard to see in the sun without a shade. I now mount it higher. Put mount on the handle bar so the GPS is now about eye level.

Mine is similar to this.

It couldn't be any simpler.

As mentioned RAM Mounts are the best mounts and you buy a separate base to mount your Model GPS,, Use the Short stem for less Vibration , For a cheap GPS the NUVI line is good and if you cover it with a sandwich bag it is now waterproof :O , The Cons on a Non MC GPS is no speaker to the helmet , not sure you can connect to a Blue Tooth head set!

Don't want or need speaker. Not even sure what a bluetooth is or what it does. Don't need it or want it. Not seeking to connect to the world.

One of the nice features of a gps over maps is finding the nearest gas station. That is one of the features I use the most. When traveling long distance it is nice to punch up gas stations along your route and ride directly to them. When on new roads you never know exactly where gas stations are. I have been on a couple of highways that gas stations were not near the highway. You had to ride a couple miles off the main route to get to a station.

Alot of people do not want the speaker option,, I would take a month off every year and go cross country on my Nomad and never had speakers, BUT when I put a speaker in my Helmet it was a real bonus.. I did not have Blue tooth only green teeth :O lol , But did use a plug in speaker.. As for the GPS I do prefer the GARMIN line, I have 5, 2 for my and 3 for my kids ,they have great customer service and even the NUVI line holds up well.. A clear sandwich bag makes it waterproff :)
