Mike and the Deer

I hope Mike chimes in to give us an update on his rcovery. His accident brought a question to my mind.

Do those deer warning whistles work? Maybe a better question is does anyone have any first hand knowledge of anyone hitting a deer with one or two of those things mounted on bike or a car?

I mounted two on my bike before my recent 1400 mile trip to Montana. One deer ran across the road about 100 yards in front of me...I am wondering if he heard the whistle and that is why he ran far ahead of me instead of right in front or on me?

If the deer do hear them and they spook,....that's the last thing I want them to do. I'd rather have them stand and listen as long as possible. Maybe run once I get there. If that makes any sense.

Me step-father hit a deer many years ago with those things attached to his front bumper. I used to have a picture showing all the damage to the truck -- and in the picture you can see the deer-whistle still on the bumper -- at least one of them.

So... in his situation it didn't keep the deer from jumping in front of him. He never bought any others after that.

I don't know if they work or not , but all the deer I've hit were running as if being chased and weren't going to stop until they where out of danger. I did not have deer whistles on my truck.

Fred Rau, a motojournalist did an article on them a few years ago. Basically, deer hear in the same range we do, so if you or I can't hear it, they can't too. No, they don't work, it's a scam.

From what I've read and heard about deer whistles, they don't work. I remember reading an article once that said they actually call the deer towards the whistle. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but I don't really put a lot of faith in them.

I saw 3 deer on the way to work today only 50 feet from the 401, the busiest highway in Ontario. I am happy they just looked at me and did not move. I had already passed a deer carcase at the side of the road a few kilometres earlier. There seems to be a lot more in this area (Southern Ontario) this year. I have seen quite a few over the last 2 weeks.

There is Nothing made by man that will scare a deer away from the road, in such away that you don't even see the deer.

I have the blasted deer whistles on my van. They were just there when i bought it, and I see deer driving the van all the time.

So far as I can tell there is deer in all the lower 48, probably all of Canada and all Alaska.

I saw deer my self in 40 states of 40 states I rode thru. I saw the most in New York, with PA runner up, then Texas made 3rd with little deer.

I live in NH and so I have more time to see deer here, but a few years ago I saw the biggest buck I ever saw and it had antlers like a tree! I thought it was a x-mass joke as it was standing still right by the road, and didn't move when I stopped the van turned it and aimed the head lights on it for a good look.

After I had my look and a guffaw or 3, it turned and ran and then and only then did I know it was Real!

Around here no one worries about a deer, but because we have MOOSE! last week riding I saw 3, and one was crossing the road

Deer wouldn't dare jump in front of a Cajun. They know we eat anything that walks, swims, flies, or breathe. And if we run out of animals we know how to turn vegans into PETA bread!!

When I was a kid, I saw the results of a tractor trailer hitting a bull moose. The damn animal flipped over the front and went through the cab. Lets just say the driver didn't make it.
