no start 1500 nomad

hello all, just picked up a 02 project nomad. wont fire up has new battery and fuel and spark. it turns over super slow like its a dead battery but its charged and on a battery charger but the starter wire from starter solenoid gets RED hot and smokes while trying to start it. took starter out and jumped it and its real strong. any ideas would be great.

A bench tested starter is under no load. I'm not familiar with the serviceability of that starter but I'm curious if the brushes are gone.

I'm with MAS on this. Sure the starter unloaded may seem to crank ok. But the positive cable to the starter should not be getting hot to touch and CERTAINLY not visually hot/smoking. Could be the magnets in the starter have come loose and are actually dragging on the rotor. Another check is the voltage drop during cranking. With a good starter and fully charged battery the voltage across the battery should not drop below 11 volts during cranking. If it drops lower than 11 volts during cranking then something in the starter circuit is creating a high resistance, which correlates to the starter wire getting very hot.

Be sure and check your grounds. I recently cleaned up all the contacts on my new to me 02 and quite a few were green or crusty.

The engine could be seized up. Take out a plug on each jug and scope it for corrosion or damages to the cylinder.
With a plug out on each cylinder and the rear wheel in the air you should be able to put the transmission into 2nd gear and spin the rear wheel forward by hand. If not find out why. Look for metal particles in the oil and filter.
