Fifth Gear Banging

Guy just texted message me. "03, 1500 Nomad. Banging sound in fifth gear. No other gear does this at all, just fifth gear. Mechanic, or that's what he calls self, put a new clutch pack in it. Made no difference. What is the culprit?

I'd check the U joint on the driveshaft, I'm guessing its ready to break.

Cant say on either. Will check it for him after church services today. He just said fifth gear and no other gear at any speed. U-joint or bevel gear bearing was my first thought but that should be in any gear.

A bad U joint is especially noticeable in 5th gear, while coasting, or gently on and off the throttle.

This is what I know now. I rode the bike today. Never heard banging. What I did feel was a vibration. Kinda was a up from and fade back down to a fade. Like a pulsing vibration. Rear tire has been changed along with the whole drive shaft and u-joint. It’s not in the handle bars but I did notice the front tire was still the 150 AND the sidewall had a large crack at least 12 inches long. I made big sweeping patterns at 60 mph and couldn’t tell it change the vibration.

There are way too many noises and vibrations on the 1500\1600 platform that should just be ignored.

Newer ownership will magnify every last one, even the imagined ones.

After riding a Venture for several years I thought my newly purchased '06 Nomad was coming apart. They make more noise than a $20 hooker.....so I'm told. I'm not sure how many wide, sweeping turns I'd make with a foot long crack in the front tire. I'm not sure I'd even cruise straight ahead with a crack like that.

This guy has put 46000 of the 83000 on the bike and has owned it for 9 years. So he should know the bike. He said it was a banging sound. I never heard any banging.
