loose belt

I'm taking a chance asking this question but I'm gonna anyway :-). What are the symptoms of a drive belt that's too loose?
Changed my tires and now I have a slight...rumbling vibration for lack of a better word. Nothing that stops me from riding just trying to find out what it could be. Doesn't feel like a balance problem but not ruling it out.........Mike

I have always just grabbed my belt where the adjustment window is on the guard and twisted. I want it to twist about 45 degrees and no more. If you can twist it 90 degrees you are way too loose. I'm sure others will tell you to get a tension tool but this is just how I have always done it on all my bikes with no problem.

Check belt tension according to your owner's manual or shop manual. Then you will know for sure if it's too loose or tight.

+1 on what recumbentbob said, sort of. i and many others believe the factory spec is too tight. 7 -10 mm of deflection at 10 lbs works much better than the factory 5 mm. a number reports of wearing out the front pulley bearing and/or the wheel bearing when running at factory spec. a lot more complaints of loud belt whine, too. i had the whine. 10 mm eliminated it completely.

K, thanks all. What are the repercussions of a too loose belt other than the obvious slip over the sprockets. Stripped, early worn, slapping or???

Just my thinking here, but at 20 bucks for the belt tensioning tool and 300+ for a belt...…. I like tools anyway so...

Yet why do I still use the 45 Degree philosophy? May have been dropped on my head as a youth one to many times?? YMMV

I would assume this is with the rear wheel off of the ground. Is that correct?

Yep, manual spec of 5mm deflection was way to tight on my bike. Under 10 mph it would stop you like applying brakes and felt notchy, if that's a word.
