Drain Plug Washers

Clips and Fasteners has a package of 50 Black Fibre 12x22x2 drain plug washers for $8.10. They also have 12x22x1.5 Aluminum ones for $14.14. Will the fibre ones be okay. In any case, 50 is a lifetime supply I'll never use, so I'll start selling them on the street corner.

Engine oil Drain plug washers ? You don't need any unless you screwed up the one you have by using it.

The better way to drain engine oil is via the screen filter, which is the lowest possible point in the first place. And clean the screen. Pay attention to the way the parts come out, and don't get the order of the screen turned around. It works one way and only one way. The bolt is a slotted cap and will drain oil partly out. So you can drain the oil and let it drip a while so oil isn't pouring all over the place, blocking vision, and so the order of things in case you drop something.

Now a few new O rings that seal that drain bolt might be something to have, but my first one is still there so far. I tend to clean the strainer screen every other oil change and don't really find much. But the first time I cleaned it at 3,000 miles it was full of crud, and gasket materials with metal filings too !

I had the bike in for a repair that required draining oil. It came time to change the oil later and AFTER I installed the plug and filled the oil, it dawned on me that there was no washer. I strained the old oil but didn't find the washer, so I assume it got lost at the repair shop. So far, no leaking, but when I next change the oil I'll put a washer on. My question remains: does fibre vs aluminum matter?

I would go with fibre,or rubber.It has more give in it,and will make a better seal.

And I would go with the alloy washer since you will never touch the blasted thing again. I have never once removed that drain plug. Never have on any Nomad yet. Never did on my 01 and never did on my 06. Any car parts Jobber like NAPA VIP and etc should have these in boxes of sizes.

if it's not leaking wait until you are ready for the next oil change and just take the plug to any car parts store.

does the washer need to be aluminum? maybe because steel washers are too hard with no give?

It came with aluminum use aluminum. the book says change it I change it.

I've reused mine for at least 6 oil changes with no problems. I did replace the originals with magnetic plugs. I've always filled a 1/4 inch of the threads at the head with permanent gasket sealer. 4 street bikes, 43 years, 1000s of miles, many oil changes, no problems. Nomad runs hot enough that I get no hard residue on the plug.

I put a magnetic plug in.
It’s spose to grab any metal particles that get into oil
It has a metal washer
Never seen any metal particles on it, so I guess that’s a good thing!
