Vaquero overheated

I need some help. I had my lowers/radiator shroud painted. When took the shroud off they disconnected the fans and never reconnected. I found out when I was stuck in traffic in the city and of course going up hill. I got into a parking lot as fast as I could, but it had already started blowing out the radiator cap(I'm assuming) I trailered it home and am now letting it cool off for a while.

So I pulled the side cover and the overflow bottle is at the full mark, so I started it up and it proceeded to go over temp. Fans are running and looks like coolant is coming out of the lower part of the radiator. Can I assume the thermostat is stuck shut and some how blew a hole in the radiator? Doesn't appear to be any damage to the radiator

Don't assume anything.
Check and test the whole cooling system.
Do you have the kawasaki service manual?

Also after it's fixed change the oil and filter.
Hopefully it didn't get hot enough to score the cylinders.

You might as well get a thermostat too.

It's normally $518.75. I got it for $465 with tax. They gave me my UofM discount

Damn... I have my old rad from my Voyager lying around unused, and I'm sure I could have shipped it on over to you cheaper than that. I don't know if it would work, but there's many of us who have installed the KAMS kit on our Voyagers (which contains a new radiator) and have a perfectly good one left over as a result.

Peg, What is in the KAMS kit? I thought it was just a shield for the radiator and exhaust?

It's a shroud to enclose the radiator (a new one is in the kit) to blow the air down instead of back, plus another fan and enclosure to pull the hot air away and down from the rear pipe.

It includes all the bits in this photo from Kaw... There's nothing wrong with the original radiator - the new one simply sits in a very slightly different position on a new bracket also in the kit.

I know this is a little late but if you pressurize the cooling system, you can track the leak when it is cold.

If you think it is the radiator, take it to a radiator shop. They can verify the leak and repair it. Would be a lot less than a new core.

The shop will pressurize the radiator and submerge it in a tub of water to locate the leak. You would be surprised what a good shop can fix.

The other thing I have seen are leaks when a hose splits and it will spray a small stream to another location and it will mislead you.

What Snake said! Also, after the radiator install, get one of your old hoses, install a pressure sleeve so you can pressurize your whole coolant system, that way you can check the head gaskets, barrels, all passages for leaks, making sure nothing else is compromised....
After you verify everything is ok, fill her up with water/coolant/ DEI's radiator relief, crank her up, and keep a eye on your temp...., if things are stable, should be good to go.
Be doubly sure to change your oil and filter with new....

I have an extra Radiator just laying around also.

Note to those that don't know - the PreKAMS radiator is different than the Post KAMS radiator. I'm assuming the PreKams is what is on the Vaquero. (I did not check the parts list)
