When looking at a used bike just start it up from cold, if it idles smoothly at 1200-1400 then drops to 950 as it warms up...... the ECU is stock. Ivan's flash will cause cold idle of 2000-2500 and a fair bit of surging as it warms up and settles down to 950.
Thanks Garry - yes, I've read about the high cold idle characteristics of the Ivan's flash and the surging. That's a good tip on how to distinguish an Ivanized bike from a stocker. If I was trading in a bike I'd be sure and let the dealer know about all mods to get more money, and you'd think in the "information age" the dealer would list all those mods in their system so any salesperson could bring stuff like that up and use it as a sales tool. But it doesn't always work that way. I hate it when I'm better informed about a product than the person who is trying to sell it.

No, my re-programed ECU is just 1500 rpm when start it up from cold, then drops to about 850 in 2-3 minutes. No surging.

Just my thoughts. I was happy as hell with my Vaquero after the 1st 1k and started relaxing on the be easy break in stuff. I put ray's throttle mod on at around 500. big difference in low gears eliminating the slow speed jerking. I went back and forth and sent probably 100 PM's asking what the " real story" was with the flash. I had it done and it's a complete different bike after the flash. I have seen ZERO gas savings at 2500 miles I've never gotten over 35mpg. I don't care about that though. The mechanic at the Kawasaki dealer I go to rode it after putting the ECU back in and his words were " that's the way this bike should run out of the box from Kawasaki" I agree nothing is " wrong" with it stock. But it's night and day after the flash. It doesn't turn it into a race bike, drag bike or anything like that that. It's just opens up what Kawi turns down and makes it even more enjoyable to ride. The cold start is a little different while it hunts for idle but mine surges up to about 1100-1200 rpm 2 times then settles back down within a minute or so

it's not like putting ranch on a pizza. Your not ruining something that was already good like that's doing. Why anyone would do that is beyond me. Has to be a Yankee thing. And by yankee. I mean anyone North of Pasadena Tx

I'm a Yankee, and I absolutely agree that ranch would destroy a pizza. Now put some hot sauce on it and now you're cooking with fire.....

Finally Someone in Minneapolis that agrees. Worked at Old Chicago for 9 years and It always pissed me off that people would ask for Ranch dressing for there pizzas. WTF It's Pizza and Beer Not Pizza and Ranch. Ranches are in Texas South of Pasadena, TX. I guess

I would like to try Ivan's flash but by the time I pay for shipping and the flash it's going to cost me around $675 Australian dollars and I'm worried about the potential of the ECU getting lost in transit.

I have read the list of items that Ivan's re-flash addresses and I do agree those areas certainly could be improved but for now I'm going to get the bike properly run in then assess it's performance from there.
I've sent you a private message. Perhaps there is a chance for you to test out a flashed bike. I think we live near each other and I have the only flashed Vaquero in Australia! For now...

I went for my first ride of the year today (had 5cm of snow two days ago and it is supposed to cover the ground again tonight). This was also my first ride with the Ivan reflash and it is a huge difference than stock. It is night and day really. The bike is much sportier and responsive. The idle is a little wacky though. Even after riding for a 1/2 hour or so and stopping for 20 minutes the idle fluctuated after restarting the engine. It would climb and hold just below 2000rpm and drop to 1200 and then back up 1500. it does that for 20 seconds or so then it drops to the proper idle speed (950-1000). One touch of the throttle and it does this all over again. That was only my first ride so I will see if this continues or not. My only issue with this is when I am riding I want the rpms to drop to idle when I need to feather the clutch during slow maneuvers. We will see.
