Front Turn Signal and Light Wiring help needed
I had to put a new turn signal and aux light bar on my nomad. I'm having a problem in that my turn signals work front and rear, my aux lights work (they are on a separate switch), but my rear running light is dead.
I've checked the rear bulb, and it is fine. everything was working at my last inspection, prior to my work on the new light bar. as that was the last change made, I'm thinking I have my wiring all screwed up. wiring diagram shows Gray, BK/Y, and R/BL involved in the turn signal. I have 4 wires on the new light bar. turn signals are red and black, and the aux lights have a green and brown wire. how do I hook it all up, and does this in fact have something to do with my rear running light and brake light not working? The front turn signals are also running lights.
Are they on when the ignition switch is on?

There are 3 wires on each stock front turn/running lights on a 1600.
Probably the same on a 1500. The blue wire is the running light and should go to each side. Black/Yellow is the ground and should also go to each light. Gray is the right turn and Green is the left turn. If you only have 2 wires coming from the new lamps then I suspect there in lies at least part of the problem. I'm not sure why that would effect the brake light. Also do not connect your aux lights to these circuits. You will overload them. The switch you are using should be powered from the battery with a inline fuse. Hope this helps.

Ok re read your post both tail and brake light out, check your fuses. If indeed you wired your aux lights directly to your tail light circuit without a relay you are going to blow fuses.

checked fuses. all good. since the turn signal only has two wires, I'm guessing it's not set up to use as running lights?

In the rear, the turn signals are turn signals only, no running lights.

If everything else works, then the main fuse is fine. It is tucked into the wiring harness under the seat. You need to dig around. You say you fuses are good, but did you just look? Sometimes a blown fuse is subtle and what looks fine is actually not passing current. I would remove the tail light / brake fuse and do a continuity test with a meter or try putting in a new fuse.

The OEM Turn Signals have 3 wires.
If your New Signals have only 2 That is the problem 1. wire is the hot 2. wire is the ground. You have to wire it accordingly if you don't , you will blow fuses. Also by using a NON OEM 2 wire turn signal you will loose your running lights. ( I am sure there are bells and whistles you can add to correct this) |

thanks to all you guys for your input and support. I did finally figure out my wiring on the front turn signals was wrong. i also blew the main fuse in the process. all fuses are replaced and things are all working now, including the rear signals and brake lights. I just have to decide on the wiring for the aux lights in the front that are on a separate switch. I have the power feed and will probably use the black/yellow ground that is used on the front turn signal. at least everything is lit up as it should.
thanks again! |
