Oil Change Question....

2010 Nomad with 23k's... changed the oil(left it drain overnigh), added 5quarts of Valvoline 20w-50 synthetic. Went for a ride and 100 miles later the bike sounds like i have a diesel engine there...what gives?

Never had a single problem, i am hearing all type of noises, clunking and valve tapping?

Nope nothing at start up and it gets worse once the engine its warmed up...

Ideas??

What oil were you running previous to this, and did you hear any of the same noise then? Did you make any changes to your bike before this noise started

Have you checked the oil since the noise started? Is the noise a mechanical clatter? Is it coming from the top end? Is it pinging? Sounds like a diesel isn't enough for me. Too many times, one person's idea of "sounds like a diesel" is very different from another's.

check your oil level according to the owner's manual. You may have too much or not enough oil in it.

Yeah its coming from the top end and Also crank case(like it has a loose nut inside), i had the same weight oil before. Only change now is i switched from an Oem filter to a bosch 3323. Its a clunck from the inside case. Bike Still got plenty of power, its just the sound. Also It DoesnT sound at Start up....Only when its warm and after a few miles of riding.

As others suggested, check the oil level per the manual. If still hearing a "clunk" and the oil level is OK, I'd take it to a shop and have them look at it to be on the safe side.

Is the Valvoline that you put in it a Motorcycle Specific Oil? If it is normal CAR oil that MAY be a problem. Many oils have stuff in them to make them Slipperier and the wet clutch in your Nomad won't like that.

I have always used Rotella T6 5W-40 which has worked well for me for many miles and has a Motorcycle rating for use with Wet Clutches. (IE: No friction modifiers)

Question - Was that your first Oil Change in 23,000 miles? That oil must have been a thick sludge. If it was that long - all I can say is you should change it and the filter more often. 3,000 - 6,000 miles depending. I shoot for 5-6K with the Rotella.

I'd also drain the oil and see if there's anything obvious there, also change the filter, I'd do the filter anyway.

I have this on mine in the past, turns out i overfilled it. Think the hydrallic valves makes noise when overfilled, even just a little.

Dont really matter its just Personal Preference.

*** Update**

Eventhough i was Skeptical about it i changed the oil filter(from a bosh 3323 to OEM) and the bike now barely makes the clunking sound that i was describing...i know guys that have used the same filter without a single problem...like i said it only cluncks(inside the crancase) on idle and No under load, perhabs oil filter restriction?
