Route 66

I'm planning on making a trip to San Diego in early September. I thought that on the return trip to Texas it might be interesting to drive Route 66 as much as I could. Anyone have any experience doing that? Are the drivable sections of the road clearly marked? I've seen several guide books on Route 66 and things to see along the way. Any suggestions on whether any of these are worth buying. I'd only ride from California to the Texas panhandle, then I'd head back to the coast. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Its a novel idea. One I have shared. However, at least in Missouri the idea is better than the reality. It is extremely poorly marked and parts of the mother highway are like riding down a railroad bed. Maybe other areas are better bit my experience wasn't great.

I have a special love for Route 66 having grown up and living a large part of my adult life around the old route 66 , the new route 66 and finally the interstate which finally segmented both the old and new route 66 in eastern Missouri. As Wayfarer pointed out there are some sections which just aren't worth the time and effort to track down and visit. But then again there are still some great choices through every state on by-passes which make for great riding. Many an old town had route 66 as their main street and they are still there left for you to explore. You won't get bored that's for sure. Here is a great sight in helping you plan a fantastic trip on the old route 66....

Route 66 "the road that USED to be"... there's still a pretty good section of it left here in AZ, from about Kingman to Seligman.

I just rode Route 66 from Missouri to midpoint in Texas. The road is terribly marked. Lesson learned: know and write out each turn with mileage so you know when to turn. I'll be using notecards with the day's route when I finish the route.

Example: R on xxxxx street in 5 miles.
L on xxxxx blvd in 19 miles
Etc. etc.

The signs are there, sometimes. Though they're faded brown and not easy to follow.

Thanks for the feedback. I found some pretty good information on the RoadTripUSA sight. Thanks OldSchool. I think the trip will be do-able & starting to work up some notes on the route & things to see on the way. I'm looking forward to it.

Route 66 is pretty well marked (actually right on the road surface) through AZ & CA.
