Front brakes are really grabby

Hey gang,

The front brakes on my 1600 Nomad are really grabby all of a sudden.
It's as if the calipers haven't opened all the way and there's a bit of friction on the rotor.

Anyone ever experience something like this before and is it a simple fix?

I'm not bad with tools, as long as I have some basic direction.

Yup, had the same problem a few months back with the right one sticking, causing it to drag. I ordered rebuild kits off E-bay and rebuilt both the front and rear calipers. It is an easy job. To rebuild the calipers, you are basically cleaning the pistons and replacing the rubber O-rings. However, removing the calipers, you will have to bleed the lines.

To see if your calipers are sticking, ride your bike up a slight incline and apply to brakes, then release. If you roll back easily, they're not sticking.

If you have already sprayed everything down with brake cleaner, next step would be when was the last time the fluid was changed? Have you checked the pads for irregular wear? after that I would look at rebuilding the calipers and master cylinder.

The N'ad has 41k on it. Brake fluid was changed by the PO in June of 14. He's a friend, so I know it was done.

I had my Michelin Commander II's installed in January & the shop said there was irregular wear on the front pads and changed them. It rode awesome and I noticed it just the other day walking it out of the garage. I could hear the faint sound of the pads rubbing as it rolled.

So you think I should take the calipers off, clean everything, lube it and bleed?

Pads are always in contact with the rotors so some rubbing noise is not necessarily a sign that anything is wrong.
Since you say that the shop said their was irregular wear on the pads and changed them, I would be pulling the callipers off and inspecting the pads again. If they are wearing unevenly again it is probable that a puck is sticking and the wear will point to which one.

Make sure you didn't turn the little dial on the front brake lever while maybe when cleaning. That dial adjusts how sensitive the brakes are.

You must have

A different Nomad than me. the dial on the lever changes the throw depth , it does not have anything to do with brake sensitivity. at least on my bike

More like it changes the lever placement.
