Gas tank trim removal

What is the trick to removing the key switch trim to get the gas tank center trim off? There is a fuel octane sticker that is on my tank and it's crooked and partially under that trim and I want to remove that ugly sticker.

It pops out on the 1700 Nomad. Not sure if the Vaq is the same.

It's the same part number for both bikes so it pops out. Get something under the edges that won't scratch and pop it up.

That chrome ring can also vibrate and cause a rattle. I cured it by putting a small diameter elastic band around the ring. The elastic band also makes the ring stand off the tank trim just a little making it easier to get a plastic putty knife under the ring to get it out.

I'll try a little harder but mine will "pop" up and then seems to catch on something and hang. I'm afraid to pull any harder. Factory service manual will be here today i'll see if I'm missing something.

Just pull it harder, it will come out without breaking anything.
Make sure you pull it straight, not on an angle and it should come out.

The service manual wont tell you how to do it any different.

All the manual says is "Remove Switch Cover (A) with a photo of the ring, that's it.

There is no explanation of how to do it.

That thing is a real pain but it will come off if you pull up straight. I was worried about breaking something but I had to really apply some force to get it off. Here's a couple of pics of what the thing looks like

I haven't tried anymore yet. Weather is decent so I'm out riding it. The new 2014 service manual does say there is a "catch" that has to be released at the front and they show a tool releasing it?? Looking at the pictures above I don't see any catch? I bet it's just a snap catch.

use painters tape

I put two wide pieces of painters tape over the bezel. Tape it to the tank bib. That way I have something more substantial to pull on. No prying under the lip or new scratches either. You are now pulling both parts and the "bib" levers it upward.
