coughing

Hello All,

Intro first. Owned several Concours, and BMW's. This is my second Nomad. Picked this one up in November from a widow whose hubby only put 5,529 miles on it with no up grades! Its a '99 Green model exactly like my first one. Yes, I know about the plastic oil gear and a few other oddities. This is a great site with wonderful information...txks to this group for filling up my reading time!
I have gutted the mufflers, and installed an 8.5 inch open air cleaner. I went from a 45 to 46 pilotjet, a 145 to 147 main jet and a EZ-Just Mixture Screw for CVK carb.
I am stilling getting a cough once in a while after idle off. Have I not gone far enough with the mixture screw yet? The performance certainly has improved, but the cough bothers me somewhat.
Do I need to turn out on the mixture screw some more...seems to be about 3 turns now?
Thanks for any help.

Hello and Welcome.

If its any consolation my FI Nomad and FI Voyager both "coughed" occasionally out of the intake.

Exclamation Mark Engine misses

I have a 2007 Vulcan 1600D Nomad that has been hiccupping or burping a lot lately. Sometimes as prepare to change gears. Its not so much a backfire as a miss any ideas on what's causing it and or what to do to fix the problem. I've added fuel stabilizer, Sea Foam, octane boosters and nothing seems to help.

Have always been told an intake cough/backfiring was from a lean mixture. If idle mixture is that far out already, may need to go up another size on the pilot. No expert, going from everything I've learned and been told.

main jet required on 1500 is normally 168-170 with open breather . Just a thought > I went 168 & 45 pilot on my 99 and have a 170 & 46 pilot to go on my 01 1500 when the weather breaks . to busy hauling gas right now .

Welcome aboard! I think your on your own for carb settings, all I can offer is to make big changes in the screw settings, and then back up to where it runs best. This way you will see if it makes a difference with the direction your going.

I have a 2001 carbed Nomad and did the Coyote intake mod from Gadget's website. I went with the 46 pilot jet, 170 main jet and 3 turns out on the pilot screw. Been running great since, averaging 39-40 mpg.

Update on coughing

Adjusted the idle mixture screw out 1/2 turn. Increased the idle as it seemed to low. Rode a half a tank yesterday and not one cough!

Thanks guys for all the ideas.
