Fuel Leak Help

A friend has a '99 Nomad with a fuel leak. Fuel is leaking down the inside of the front jug, down toward the water pump. It is not the tank, no sign off fuel there.

I checked all the fuel lines, they looked fine. I think that the problem is one of two places from where we can see the fuel: either the fuel pump is leaking or possibly a leak at the carb, rear area.

If anyone has any information or can possibly point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Tomorrow I'm riding my '99 over and we are doing a fuel pump swap to see if we can rule that out.

Ron, my money is on the fuel pump. When mine failed, that's exactly what it did. it was hard to tell where the leak was coming from initially.

I agree with Daryl. They do start leaking before they go bad. I would look there first.

Yeah, since my main office moved to Las Vegas I have been on the road a lot. Spending way to much time in airports and on airplanes. But at least I have work, so it's all good!

Good thing you caught it early. They will keep working for a while and then one day a bunch of gas will pour out and you are in deep trouble then. My Oldsmobile Cutlass did that to me as I got to work. Had to call my wife when I got off work at 3 AM to come pick me up and that was 45 miles away. Then had to get a friend to help tow it home. I worked on that thing and finally got it replaced. Never any more problems with the fuel pump.

Not sure on the 1500, but there was talk on here of a Mitsubishi pump being very similar. Not sure of the #, others may chime in or check our tech section there was more info on it there I believe.

My bike has been smelling of petrol lately, no sign of a leak, but under the tank is a plastic cover, about 3in square, and 1in deep, with a hose connected to it,dangling down between the tank and seat to hang in mid air i cant see where it fits, the bike also stutters/hesitates a bit from tickover through low rev,s, then its fine, there is also another small hose that should be connected to the right hand air filter back plate, but it dont reach ? the bike has had the reed valves blocked off and is fitted with highway hawk straight through pipe,s, i dont know what the last bloke did about jetting ,if anything,it was running rich, so i wound the mixture screw in from 3 turn,s out, back to 2, and that helped and cured the richness, any comment,s ,even sarcastic piss take,s, are welcome

You have to be more specific, the carbed bikes have an external fuel pump, whereas the FI bikes have a pump located in the tank. The Ebay pumps are for the FI bikes. We have a couple part numbers listed in our Tech section here for the FI pumps.

My 99 had the same problem. Fuel leak around pump seam. It is a crimp connection with a rubber seal between the pump halves. Wonder if the seal is not is not compatible with ethanol?

Under the tank to the right of the frame backbone over the front cylinder. Filter is also there. Its there just to maintain fuel pressure i think. The bike will run without it in a pinch if you run a line from the petcock to the carb. This is what I had to do during a road trip until a new one was found.
