Probably more information than anyone wants to read but here goes:

IBA will take the Spot/Spotwalla as supporting documentation but not as direct proof of the ride. You must show gas stops, rest stops longer than 30 minutes and any other stops of significant duration using a receipt. You must also show the route you took, with complete map highlighting the route and your stopping points.

The receipts must show date, time, physical location, gas amount and cost. You must also put the odometer reading along with the above information on a log sheet. If you make a significant "corner" on your route, you must get a receipt to show the route change.

All of this is reviewed by IBA people to make sure you did the ride. It is rather involved in that but it isn't that difficult to get documentation routine and take care of it. On a ride of this length, a missing intermediate receipt (one form the middle of a state, not the only one from that state) could be missing and it wouldn't jeopardize the ride.

Spot/Spotwalla only pings up in 10-20 minute increments, so there is a chance your route may be a little off on that map. More noticeable on a short ride. There are other programs out now that ping up more frequently and I think the new Spot 3 will do it every 5 on the Spot Tracker page.

Each to his own. But, as for me I want to take the time to see the USA and the sights and sounds there in. It would appear that IB rides are all about getting to the destination as fast as possible. I prefer the ride. Just saying.

I agree with you. I would be especially concerned about the safety aspect. To maintain the required pace I would think that you would be travelling at much higher than normal speeds, spending long hours on the road resulting in fatigue and lack of alertness and of course critters on the road at night. In my opinion, just a recipe for disaster.

But then again, some people just live for a challenge. "Whatsamatter, Are you chicken, McFly?"

Not all IBA rides are about speed. They have National Park ride that is only limited by finishing within 365 days. For a SS1000, you have to maintain basic normal highway speed. I usualy take a two meal breaks and every fuel stop is 10-15 minutes. They are long days but like on any ride, you need to know when to pull the plug if you are fatigued. It isn't everyone's cup of tea.

The local BMW MOA club is going to do a club SS1000 within AZ. I'd need a different seat and analgesics to do it, so I'll skip that one. I can only take about 12 saddle hours and it doesn't matter how fast I am going.

How can everyone show a route change on a significant corner with a receipt? Some places are in BFE. What if I pull off the road to rest and there's nowhere I can get a receipt? So now people have to plan routes that suit the rules. Too much OCD for me.

The receipts are to show that you didn't take a short cut. Reasonable distance and available services need to be taken into consideration. On the 50CC ride, you need to know what is open in the wide open space of west TX a night so you can get gas/receipts.

You could do it with a 4-6 hour break in the middle. Start early in AM, break somewhere in the 12 hour time frame (you should be around 600 miles probably), and restart after some rest. You get 24 clock hours to do. Just a suggestion if it is something you want to try but I understand your situation.

It all depends. When I went to Crescent City, the first leg to Rawlins was about 780 miles. Ross and I did it in 11 hours with stops. Yeah, we were flying, but I was shot at Rawlins. May be with a 4 hour break I'd feel different, but I know a better seat would help too. It's still on my list.
