Size change

Thinking about replacing the 170/70 16 rear tire on my '11 Nomad with a 150/80 16. The only significant difference will be the width. Does anybody know if this would cause any problems with ride or handling? The reason I am looking at this is that I have had great luck D404 tire on my '02 and the 150 is the closest they make to the 170. Plan would be to stay with a 130/90 on the front. below are the specs I got from an online tire calculator. Thanks

---------------------------------170/70-16 -----------150/80-16------ ---Difference
Diameter inches (mm) -------25.37 (644.4)----- 25.45 (646.4)---------0.08 (2) 0.3%
Width inches (mm) ------ --- - 6.69 (170) --------5.91 (150) -------- -0.79 (-20) -11.8%
Circum. inches (mm) -------79.7 (2024.44)-----79.95 (2030.73)---- 0.25 (6.28) 0.3%
Sidewall Height inches (mm)--- 4.69 (119)------- 4.72 (120) -------- 0.04 (1) 0.8%
Revolutions per mile (km) ---794.96 (493.96) ---792.5 (492.43) --- -2.46 (-1.53) -0.3%

Another difference you didn't mention would be load capacity.

Right you are. I guess I was thinking that the 150/80 is the stock size for the '02, which I forgot to mention, and that the load would be pretty much the same.

Shinko Journey,160/80/16, or a Michelin Commander 180/65/16, either will outlast the D404 by twice. Ron Ayers has the Shinko on sale now for 111.19,. I just installed the 2nd one on my '12 Nomad. Great tire, at about half the price of the Michelin. It does last very long.

You can also use a Dunlop American Elite 180/65B-16 This is a dual compound tire that is made for long life. I put two of them on my 2011 Voyager and got 23,000 miles out of both of them. Changing a rear tire only once a year is a blessing! The load capacity of this tire is more than you could ever put on the bike and it rides and handles great. Down side, they cost a little more than the Commander II.

Thanks. I know not many like the dunlop tires, but get 12,000 out of the D404's on my '02. If I can get anywhere near 23,000 the additional cost might be worth it. Do you run the MT90B16 up front?

I've got the 180/65 Michelin on my Voyager, over 7000 miles and wearing great.
