stock filters not washable. If you can get a good price on K&N filter (50-60 buck range) its worth it.

No, stock filters aren't washable. For less than the price of two stock filters you can buy a K&N and the cleaning/oiling kit to service it. A K&N, properly maintained will eventually pay for its self since you won't have to buy filters anymore.
These bikes come from the factory tuned very lean. Engine pinging under load from the lean tuning is not uncommon. Installing a freer flowing K&N air filter may lean your mixture even more and increase the pinging problem. This can be delt with by making the fuel/air mixture richer. There are several ways to do this. Many Vulcan1600 owners install a fuel processer but some will make the mods suggested on Gadgets Fix-it page. Gadgets is a web site dedictaed to modifications to the Vulcan 1500/1600 and is a huge resource of information. You might want to save it in your favorites. Here is a link to a simple and inexpensive way to enrichen your fuel/air mixture. I did this mod 40K miles ago. It works and I haven't seen any undesirable effects. http://www.gadgetjq.com/ping_fix.htm Here's another Gadgits Fix It page link to another modification that makes your fuel/air mixture richer. This one is a little more challenging than the last link. http://www.gadgetjq.com/tps_adjust.htm Hope this helps. VB

have a cobra fuel mod on it now so it wont be a problem to adjust the mixture. may need to ask for the pin sets for a better air filter.

That filter won't work in my bike. This is what it should look like. for a few $ more I'd get a L&N http://www.amazon.com/KA-1603-Kawasa...=K%26N+KA-1603

Uni Filter.
I'm using a Uni filter. Seems to be the same as a K&N, washable and uses foam oil and it cost less. Anyone have experieince with Uni filter and how they work.
