Try putting a few pennies between the spring coils to lengthen it enough to put back on the pegs, then put the stand down and the pennies will all fall out.

Even more important is why it fell off in the first place. It isn't supposed to. More than likely, the female section of the pivot has become elongated and is no longer round, which reduces the spring tension and it falls off.

the grooves look good. got the spring back on but the kickstand will not stay up...when
i put it up it will settle back down about an inch or so and the spring feels loose. the spring pin on the bike side does not appear bent or damaged. do these springs stretch over time? |

In laymen terms , what CJ said was;
The bolt that holds the kickstand on goes through a hole in the frame. The hole in the frame gets elongated over time and lets the kickstand itself wobble in the hole. You have to either put a bushing in the hole or fill the hole and redrill it.

If you have a jack or lift for the bike you need to get it on that and then remove the kickstand altogether to do the repair. Or block the bike so it won't tip and then remove it.

Nomad, what CJ is saying is that a common area where owner maint. is lacking is the need to lubricate the sidestand mounting bolt on which the stand swings. Owners don't lube that area, the bolts diameter wears down and the holes in the stand that it passes thru elongate. The first symptom is that your bike seems to lean farther over to the right on the side stand than others. Then when the wear gets worse the stand can wobble enough when up that the spring falls off. You need to put your bike in a wheel chock so it stands up with out the side stand, remove the bolt and side stand from the bike and determine if replacing the bolt will solve your problem or if the holes are so elongated that you must replace the side stand to fix things. Some owners have tried sleeve or bushings or welding and redrilling the side stand also.
Hope this helps T Ross

this is indeed the case...as i was afraid of. thanx gentlemen for the assistance. now i just have to jack the bike up and pray that a bolt swap will fix it. i must confess that i never lubed this before...just one of those things you don't think of! |

Was my explanation so confusing that it took 3 of you to interpret it?

Apparently it was as you can see who's explanation he chose to quote.

Doubtful that a new bolt will fix it. I had mine welded up, then redrilled. Shop put a larger, 1/2" bolt with a bushing in the frame. It's solid as a rock, now. Just gotta keep it lubed up.
