Shopping for used Nomad 1500

I originally put my first post on the Wanted section of the Free Classified section introducing myself and stating that I was in the market for a used Nomad 1500. I've been having a heck of a time finding a nice used Nomad here in Canada. I went to see my first one this afternoon. It was an '04 with 49,000 miles on it. Not bad but rode a bit hard and put away wet. The battery was completely dead and we had to boost the battery to get the bike running.

My technical question is: as soon as we took the booster cables off of the battery the thing died instantly. The fellow knew that the battery was cooked (I don't know why he wouldn't put a new one in when he's trying to sell the dang thing!!) but does anyone think that there could be a problem with the charging system as well??

He obviously didn't take care of the bike. I wouldn't buy it.
If you wait a little bit another will come along.
Of course, you are in charge, so do as you wish.
Good Luck.

Personally I would not try to diagnose or fix a bike, to buy it from a stranger. There are too many out there in top shape that are cheap enough. I bought a garage queen 2006 Nomad two years ago for 6k. It had 2k miles on it. I have been very happy with the used bike.

Be patient. You will find a nice one that hasn't been "put away wet."

I'm curious why you wouldn't want a 1600 instead of a 1500?

I don't know what's involved to bring a bike from the US to Canada but it might be worth checking into. You'd get a better selection down here.

I would agree with Loafer here. Obviously didn't take care of his things.

As for the battery....I learned the hard way (twice) that these bikes need a battery with full capacity (healthy) and a full charge or they just won't run. Unfortunately with the new no maintence gell cells they seem to fail all at once rather than slowly and over time. Good potential to leave you stranded somewhere.

Good luck with your search.

My 01 the battery was dead when the old guy went to sell it, same symptoms it wouldn't run if you took the cables off. He replaced the battery and I went back a day later and all was well.

I know you said 1500 but I've seen this one on another Vulcan forum and thought it was nicely setup, priced not bad for the Canadian market and he may be willing to deal as it doesn't seem to be moving at this point. http://kitchener.kijiji.ca/c-cars-ve...AdIdZ388484602

Wish you were in the Valley of Texas, I would sell you my 2005 Nomad for $6k with a new stock windshield and the bat wing I use. Also have extra set of pipes I used one month and then put the stock pipes back on as I could not hear my stereo am/fm usb disc radio. LOL Has a back rest. Hope you find you a deal on a nomad, I have never regretted buying my 2005 1600 new and enjoying it for all these years.

Several rider from Canada buy from the states,,Ringading did.. even with border tax usually comes out way cheaper,,Just besure to have all the paperwork in order.A dealer from Canada just picked up my buddies HD,and was picking up 3 more bikes while in the states.
Check you listings in your nearby border towns.may be cheaper then you think...There is a link on the Canadian site explaing the deal step by step.Illtry and find it,Hopefully another member from Canad has it and can find it faster

You could call this dealer, they have a great reputation and they will ship it to you.
They almost always have Nomads for sale.
