OEM Air Filter Questions

How many miles is the OEM air filter good for? I have almost 14,500 miles on my Nomad and 2 years of riding. I checked it today and it still looks clean. Can they be cleaned if needed? When do most change out their air filter? Is there a brand that can be purchased at auto parts stores that will work on the Nomad?

You already have 10,000 more miles on yours than I got out of mine. The foam rubber deteriorated on mine. I could only find them on ebay and the dealer. I paid 40 something for mine.

When I inspected mine today it looked almost new. Guess I will have to start looking for when I do need a new one.

I thought I read in the manual to change it every 20,000 miles more often in dirty dusty conditions.

Replace it with a K&N filter... from what I hear, those things last forever! Of course, I still have the OEM filter in mine with 27k miles. It still looks good. When it comes time to replace it, I'll put in a K&N.

The K&N supplies more air flow to the system. Doesn't cost more than replacing the OEM filters twice. Something to consider. I'm happy with the K&N myself.

I plan on doing the Caddmann mod. Then if my OEM filter is dirty... oh well, it's barely providing any of the air anyway

Gene- I paid $15.99 from JC Whitney plus 6.99 shipping. Part # 1 JA 01 3897. This is an OEM paper replacement. My original looked like new after 7 years and 18K miles. I doubt I will have my Nomad long enough to get this one dirty.

Looks like I'm the only one that had the filter fail because of the foam thats used to seal the filter to the aircleaner coming apart after only eight years, the filter element was still clean looking but the seal was shot.

Any filter is only as good as the air you ride in. I kill them in NH riding dusty back roads. Either dusts gets em, or pollins do.
