I agree. My kids love going for rides. And I just hate having to give them rides...yeah right.

Man that ain't right. So they figure you can see good enough to drive and ride but not good enough to keep an eye on a ball..
I think he's saying that the surgery was successful and corrected his eyesight, so the rules won't let him be an umpire anymore. All fans know umps have faulty eyesight. It's a requirement.;)

I went through the same thing, Paul. Had bikes from a kid up until I had kids, a few priorities changed and the bikes went down the road without me. We had other hobbies as a family, camping, etc. Had a few bikes off and on while they were growing up, but nothing serious. Now the kids are both in college, and my wife and I are looking forward to the coming riding season. Hang in there, you will never regret the time spent with your kids.

The solo time for riding could be better spent with the kids. Can't take them along.

Bikes are inherently dangerous. Now, I will take my chances wearing t-shirts, no helmet at times, etc. I wouldn't risk not seeing my kids grow up.

Now that they're out? "Got my motor runnin', Head out on the highway! ..."

Paul,
I was my own decision. My vision is good enough to drive and ride, but I no longer have good enough central vision in my right eye to properly track a ball....whether calling balls and strikes, or having a play at a base where the ball and runner are coming from two different directions.

I always thought of myself as a pretty good umpire, so I didn't want to start to suck.....like a veteran professional athlete who stays in the game too long.....so I stepped out. It will be fine... and really just means I have more time to ride.... !

OP...

When it comes to the end of your life, my guess is you'll say; "I wish I could have spent more time with my kids".

No matter how much time is spent with them, eventually they move on. As time passes you'll long for the time you spent with them and wish for more. Enjoy it. ;)

On the other hand... you could get a little mini-bike for the kids and start them out with that. Just make sure it is big enough you can take a spin on it once in a while!

He's got to have a bike to put one on first Kris... he sold the bike for a camper... but I would think that would be a good idea.

And not to go too far off the trail, it reminds me of a question that was asked on an interview. The interviewer asked, you are going on a journey, a difficult one and you will have 5 animals with you on the journey: A horse, a cow, a monkey, a rabbit, and a tiger. The journey is a difficult one and there will come a time that one has to go. Which one would you get rid of? Understand that each represents one factor in your life. From what I have read, the horse=work, rabbit=love, monkey=friends, cow=family, tiger=pride. If you answer the horse, you'll never get the job. :)

When my wife an I got married, I told her someday after kids I wanted to get a bike and we could go see the country. I have a bike and have seen a lot of the USA. Now I hope my son can get enough time off to ride his Nomad with me on some of our trips. I think I am very blessed with what God has given me.

Oregon...just kidding.

Not to sound to philosophical, but I'm in each of them:
When I spend time with God I'm uplifted.
When I spend time with my wife I'm fulfilled.
When I spend time with my kids I'm empowered.
When I spend time with Scarlet (my bike) I'm thrilled.
When I spend time working I'm productive.
When I spend time learning I'm enlightened.
When I spend time with friends I'm encouraged.
When I spend time sleeping I'm renewed.
