Mods for my 06 1600

Greetings,
I plan to add chuckster's breather and a TFI, I am keeping the exhaust stock. I'm wondering if gutting the goat belly is worth the effort and cost? Does anyone have this set up? What settings did you use for your TFI? I also want to check my cam chains (30K on the bike). Any comments are welcome :)

Hey Deacon, I did the Chuckster's plate and TFI about a year ago and wanted to keep the exhaust stock. I liked the debaffled sound but keeping the stock exhaust killed my mpgs. I went from over 40 to just over 30. Air didn't have anywhere to go. I've heard gutting the goat bladder is a major pain. I bit the bullet and bought an aftermarket exhaust, the best thing I ever did. Now I'm back over 40 and it sounds great. And I can tell a big difference in performance. That air has somewhere to go now. Many others know a lot more than me, but I think you will never get the most performance or mileage with that stock exhaust on it. I got Oldbikers to help me install a new exhaust and I couldn't believe the size of that little pipe coming out of the motor. The heat shield covers up a lot. So even if ya gut that bladder, ya still got that tiny pipe. Just my 2 cents, worth probably a penny. Good luck, Jamie

I can't directly answer your question, but think of the engine as a big air pump. To get more power and more efficiency, you need to open up the pipes if you're going to open up the intake. The goat bladder is a start and something you'll want to do to get the most out of your air & fuel mods. I would seriously think about debaffling as well.

Think I read on here somewhere that you shouldn't mess with the goat bladder. Said it did something to the way the bike ran afterward. I would just invest in aftermarket pipes and be done with it.

From what Ive heard gutting the goat belly isn't worth the bother, either debaffle the stock pipes or get aftermarket pipes.
The latter is probably the best solution.

I haven't gutted the "goat bladder" but I did debaffle and it runs great with the TFI and twin, open K&N's, marbleized, etc.. Running at 110 kms per hr. or 68.35 mph. and basically empty except regular stuff like tool bag. I'm getting close to 50 mpg.

What is your reason for not wanting aftermarket pipes? If it is noise, you may consider going with road house pipes. They are not much louder than stock, and have a nice deep tone.

Deacon, First thing you need is an Idaho Jack Adapter so that you can raise your Nomad safely with a MC jack. Trust me on this one.

I was speaking to Deacon, but realy to anyone. I had a good friend who has the Roadhouse pipes and they were a good alturnitive for those who wanted the performance of aftermarket without the noise.

I believe that Roadhouse went out of business. Some vendors may still have some product left over.

FYI - Roadhouse closed up shop for good last month.

Cobra True Duals are not that loud if sound is an issue for you.

I started with the debaffle, then the fuel processor, then the open intake. Then I decided anything worth doing is worth doing right, and I bought aftermarket pipes. The Nomad performance triad: pipes/fuel/intake.
