Not what you think...

Yesterday, 4 of us set out to ride down to Tucson. Why, I don't know. Tucson is looked at by Phoenicians as Phoenix's ugly cousin. They just aren't quite as polished and sophisticated down there. Even though the greater Tucson area has a population exceeding 1,000,000, it's still laughed at by some up here. Maybe because it's 40 minutes from Mexico? I don't really know.

Anyway, after a nice mexican breakfast in Florence (you haven't lived until you've had "huevos enchilada style"), we decided to change things and we rode to Oracle Junction then turned and headed NE towards Globe. In Globe we went to the Shamrock Lounge, where the A/C and the beer is ice cold. Here we are outside the Shamrock, preparing for the 60-mile ride back home:

. . . and the Nomad is King once again!!! When I stopped on Interstate 17 to take that pic of the Yamaha XS400 in 1981, I got passed by a big pack of HD's. Now who's the boss?

Mighty neighborly of ya to let the "other" bikes tag along with the Nad.

Yeah, well I try to at least be civil with them. I let them hold my helmet and gloves while I use the men's room. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

The guy with the 03 Volusia really wants a Nomad. I'm trying to get him to take a look at the Nomad my friend is selling (03 with fairing, trunk and big-bore kit - separate thread).

That has a few overly se#ual connotations that we just won't get into here.

Because we hit the road at 6:00AM and even I have my standards. No drinking before 10:00, okay...9:00!

I must admit, although Tucson will always be "home", I doubt I will ever live there again. There are so many phenominal places in this country to live, and I happen to be in one now.

Now we may have offended a Tusconian here, but in defense of Tuscon, they do have some nice mountains to the west, the Tuscon Mountains, and

Did You Know?

Tucson is one of the top five best bicycling towns in the U.S.
Tucson was voted 'friendliest city' and one of the 'top ten U.S. cities to visit' by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.
High desert climate and surrounding mountains allow you to swim, hike, and ski -- all in one day.

Unless this sh!t happens!

I don't think that ski resort has been open for the past several years. They don't get enough snow. Arizona is not a good place to ski. Utah or Colorado is the place to go! But that resort on the side of Mt. Lemmon has the unique distinction of being the southern-most ski resort in the USA. It's about 60 miles from the Mexican border.

I'll tell ya fellas. While I was BBQ'n there in the junk yard, there were bullets flying over my head (Halloween). We were just down the street from a motel called "The No Tell Motel", and all the houses nearby had bars on the windows. True story. Spent a week in that shops' yard. We were pretty bored. Patty wanted me to run the gate down one night and just leave ha ha ha...... If I thought it would run long enough, I'd done it too.

When I first moved down here, I think it was a week or so before the 4th of July and they were running these public service messages on the local TV stations, telling people not to shoot their guns on the 4th of July. I'd never heard of this before, but it's a Mexican culture thing. The Mexican holidays - dia de los muertos and cinco de mayo are especially dangerous. There was actually a little girl killed that year, hit in the head by a randomly fired bullet over a block away. Certain parts of Mesa and Phoenix are terrible for this. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it.

We see a little of that here too. Tequilla, Tecate, and Remingtons don't mix.

Yeah, tell me about it! I tore my ACL up on Mt. Lemmon 25 years ago and am still paying for it.

Summerhaven--the resort on Mt. Lemmon--used to be a quaint place to visit. I heard that it burned down a couple years ago.

A couple fun rides in the Tucson area are out on the West side around the Senora Desert Museum and Old Tucson (a wild west theme park and film studio), and North to the Bio-Dome in Oracle. Totally different styles of rides but fun none the least.

Yes, there was a big wildfire on Mt. Lemmon a few years ago that damaged some of Summerhaven. I've never been to that area, so I don't know how much was damaged. I've only been to Tucson 4 times in 9 years. I ride through the Oracle area quite frequently. There are indeed some good rides in that area.
