I got my new avon grips today and thought I would do a little right up on my throttle mod

The avon grips come with a interchangeable cam so it will work on various models and that makes the hole process much easier.

I got a 1 1/4 pvc cap from the hardware store for 2 bucks and sawed the end off of it the same thickness as the throttle cam then cut the circle to fit

after the first rough cut I sanded the ring to the same thickness as the cam

After I was happy with the thickness I used the superglue that came with the grips to glue all the pieces together and did a final sand

all done

you will need to loosen the cable adjusters and i ended up sanding some off of the outside of the new cam to get clearance put it all back together and adjust the cables

There is no big secret here. This is all a throttle mod is

As you can see this is as easy as it gets I honestly think it is harder to get the old tube out and install the new one than it is to do this mod
So why would you pay someone to do the easy part and you would still be left with the hard part?

Thanks for the write up, looking forward to doing the mod when I get my new grips next pay. Looking at the black avon grips to go with the bars that you made for me.

I really think you will like the avons. I have ridden several bikes with avons and ISO's on and I find the avons to be far more comfortable

Nice job Don, with you excellent PVC skills you'd make one hell of a plumber.

I thought about using aluminum. But I figured if plastic is good enough for the original cam it will be good enough for a add on.. why over engineer it huh,,

Do the end caps come off the Avon grips and if so, do they just pull off or twist off.
Thank You

IIRC, there's a screw you access from inside.

So your saying that the end cap has to be on when you install the grip and you cannot remove end cap with grip installed, is that correct?

Correct for the Avons!

What do you use to lube things up before putting them together?

Maybe I'm just having a bad brain day... what does this mod accomplish?

A bigger diameter throttle cam means less distance between idle and WOT

I've done this mod myself (using PVC just like Don does here) on every set of grips I've had on my last two bikes, and been very satisfied with the result.

I'm not sure if that's because it really makes much of a difference... or just because it's very soul-satisfying to spend time at the workbench making small and cheap modifications like this one?

Wooo... Deep :D

I think it makes a difference because that is what your mind and muscles are used to. Much of riding a bike is muscle memory, the body just doing what needs to be done without thinking about it. Not picking on this mod, that is exactly what mod's are for. To make the bike behave the way you and your muscles expect it to.

That's the one I have(dshelly's); easy install and works great.

That's the one I have too!
Precision made, top quality. (IMO) I would imagine the pcv ones would not last the life of the bike ( cables would eventually make wear grooves over time)

PVC ones are fine. It's what Kaw makes them out of OEM, and it's not like there's a huge weight on them or anything?

I'm sure the pcv ones are fine, for those who went that route, the one I bought from Dave is of precision quality. I didn't have to sand, file, or glue on. It fit the exact target area and screwed in to place.
Not meaning to a sore subject here!
