View Full Version : new *bling* problem

All I wanted was to add more chrome, what could go wrong?

Let me provide some back ground first. I added some real nice Roadhouse pipes with the shark fin tips. They are kind of tall, but not as tall as fishtails and they have a 45 degree slash from top to bottom. But I am sure you all are familiar. Anyhow, love the look, love the sound, get lots of compliments....

I thought the old bike need something new, so I got lower bag rails.

I have the RH side rail in place, but my tips hit on the bottom rail. I think to myself, "I have different tips that would work", but I really like the shark fins... I could turn the tips upside down, they don't hit in that position. Could try to lower or extend the mufflers, but I dont see any way to take them down without new brackets and to extend them would require some sort of extension.

What would you do?
Or do you have a suggestion?

I would appreciate any input here, Thanks

I would forget the rails. I love the sound of RoadHouse pipes and the looks are killer.

how much room do you need? how bout longer bolts holding the pipes to the bag bracket with some washers in between the pipes and the brackets. ???

I'm going to go with Gibby on this one... do away with the bottom rails and just send them to me. That should solve your problem. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif :)

Seriously now, I'm not sure how the bottom rails mount, but could you not just move them up slightly to get away from the exhaust tips? But seriously, send them to me and I'll make them work. ;)

they bolt onto the saddle bag frame, not much in the way of moving the rails up. The rails would get in the way of the door, if moved up.

Here is a pic of the tips installed upside down.

Maybe roadhouse can help you. Call them and let them know your dilemma. They might have an extension that would work. (Or different extended tips).

Sound great don't they?................

Turn the tips out to the side so they are laying flat.

What about cutting a relief in the tips and welding in a 1/2 sleeve?

I thought this a great idea, so I went to the RH website and got this message:

CLOSURE OF BUSINESS
Roadhouse Brand Exhaust has closed its business as of November 18, 2010.
We would like to thank you for your business with us during the past years. Indeed, it has been a pleasure to serve you.

Sincerely,

Roadhouse Brand Exhaust

And Yes, they do sound great.

There doesn't seem to be much you can do that hasn't already been mentioned. Id try to keep the rails myself, and perhaps a combination of spacing the pipes down a little and possibly try to bend the brackets for the rails so you gain just enough clearance.
An extension as mentioned would work as mentioned. Maybe a truck shop or custom car supply has some chrome exaust pipe the correct diameter that will enable you to fabricate some extensions.

If that was mine, and I faced the same dilema, from your picture I would not want to lower the exhaust any farther, as I can see that they are upside down now, and to gain the clearance you need would put the pipes to LOW to the ground. What I would do (so remember this is only my suggestion) would be to rotate the pipes at a 45 from the current picture posted with the bottom (longer) facing OUT towards the side so that they kinda form a V in the middle section. Still look cool and a different take on the shark fins.
either THAT or remove the lower bag rails (which again I'd leave on like the same as I have now).

Sorry no other solution to the problem that is 0 cost or doesn't involve modification to the pipe themselves (which I wouldn't do either personally)

Still think that would look kinda cool and just a bit different, but what do I know??

Scott,
I like your idea and might put it to the test. Right now, I kind of like the lines the upside down look has. it follows the bag and fender lines. But you cant really see that in the pic above.

You had to ask didn't you http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif I think that those pipes look great on your bike, and the rails take away from the look. No matter what you do I think they are to close and will end up hitting on bumps in the road. Some times less is more ::) Return them or sell them and find another place to add chrome. ;)

The tips look really good. I think I would just sell the rails and leave it as it is. I know it sounds sweet.

I know one thing for sure, you will be dragging your tips more than you realize with them in the upside down position. Once is all it'll take to mess up those sharp looking tips.

I agree with VulcanE, since RoadHouse is out of business replacing the tips may not be an easy thing to do. Get rid of the rails, turn the tips around to their intended position and enjoy the rumble!

Good advice from all, thanks. I will measure the clearance before going around the block.
