since i like to do metal fabrication, i am designing my own custom duallys. after much thought and calculating i desided i can make pipes to come out of the goat belly with the proper bends and use after market mufflers from jc whitney. the pipes will be 1 1/4 " on the belly end, and 1 3/4" on the muffler end. i will use the oem heat shields. whitney has some neat pipes to choose from with low restriction. i will try the stock goat belly first and then maybe the one i have that i gutted. would like to retain the converter cuz i think poluttion checks are getting close in mo. not wanting loud pipes. just a clean sound. if this works, i may have a cnc bender program run to make the pipes and have them available.the mufflers from whitney are around $85.00 each, and just the right length. any one try this yet? bill

Nope, I think you're reaching true "pioneer" status. Keep us posted on your progress.

just ran into my first snag. the turn down pipes i had picked out from whitney are only 3" in diameter. the oem mufflers are 3 3/4". do you think the 3" mufflers would look anemic? i have the turn downs on my 08 wing and they look good. but they are over 4". maybe 4 1/2". if i go with the whitney mufflers i am going to make mounts for the mufflers just like oem and weld them on the muffler, and touch up the weld with silver paint. it has to look like a factory job. it won't show under the saddle bag. i noticed something else while i was under there. i think the oem pipes on the stock mufflers can be cut off the mufflers and used to mount the new mufflers on. the oem pipes are stainless steel. a real plus for longjevity. the bends on the oem muffler pipes are stamped and welded together in halves. , but there is a short section of tubing that is welded to the muffler. i can machine a 1 3/4" reducer and weld it on the end of the oem pipe and any 1 3/4" muffler will clamp on. getting really excited about this. bill

As long as the goat belly is in place in stock form, the sound will be tame compared to other unrestricted pipes on bikes. While doing some maintenance, I ran my Nomad with goat belly but no mufflers. I was shocked at how quiet just the goat belly makes the bike.

Now I have the untamed V&H with ultimate baffle.

yes I have a sey of OEM pipes from 1600 2008 Nomad. Took the off & replaced with V & H DualBaggers. Let me know we can strike some kind of deal. Only 8000 miles on the OEM pipes.

Ditto.... I did the same and agree. Before going further with your experiment, remove your stock mufflers (10 minute job with saddlebags off) and listen to the sound coming through the goat belly. I expected loud and it wasn't. I debaffled my stock pipes and like the sound with the goat belly still intact.

i am looking for a better tone. i don't want it much louder than stock. the mufflers i will be using are straight through like vance and hines. i also have a gutted goat belly if they are not quite loud enough. the oem pipes are almost loud enough just to deep and mushy sounding. i have decided to use the 27" turn down mufflers from jc whitney. they are 3" outside diameter so don't have a big expansion area to deepen the tone. ive built a few exaust systems so i pretty much got it figured out how to get different tone levels. i want to keep the goat belly intact, incase they start checking emissions, in mo.. bill

Have you actually heard a debaffled set of mufflers with the stock goat belly? It isn't much louder then stock mufflers but with a good note, not metallic or tinny. It might be what you were looking for and it's easy to do in 30 minutes without removing the mufflers from the bike at the cost of a 1-3/4" holesaw and a little Hi-Temp stove paint.
