No thanks. In auto mechanics in high school a guy in my class was timing his 1970 Bronco and got a little too close to a belt and damn near lost 3 fingers. The surgeons managed to get some movement back in his fingers though.

Like our metal shop teacher that said "there are 5 safety rules you must follow when using a hydraulic tubing bender". Then he held up his hand to count them off and had 4 fingers and a knuckle.

A freind of mine tried something similar back in the 70's. He was drunk, didn't use a screwdriver, and only lost the ends of two fingers when he hit the rad fan.

Ok a VW bug has no radiator and the fan is not accessible to get your fingers caught from the back. I'm guessing using the long screwdriver was the rational for that person not to use his fingers to do it.

I hear ya shouldn't use a Car Tire on a motorcycle. Many "experts" make that same claim! I also thought is was pretty slick like the guy seating a bead on his tire while still on the vehicle stuck on a rocky trail. Probably something not taught in shop class but pretty slick none-the-less..... ::) ::)

Please do not try this at home. There.... now everyone's happy!!

My brother sent that to me just the other day. I filed it under:
Handy to know if I ever decide to put a VW engine in my Nomad.

risky, but not bad... He used the same belt though, and had it been a new belt things would have been a little too snug..

That install used shim packs to get adjustment correct...

Well that method would work, I used to do it but with the engine OFF turning the crank with a wrench. That works to get the belt off. And it works to put the old used same belt back on.

Doing that to replace a old worn out belt and then zip on a brand new belt will kill the new belt instantly...

All the shims would be stored under the flange washer, and the new belt would be high 'e' string too tight...

BD, I don't mean to sound condesending or act superior, but this time you got the spelink wrong.

To be correct in this instance it is spilied "enginenuity" Maybe it was a typo....
