Replaced pog;question on clutch

Hi all.I finally decided to replace pog with steel gear. Was feeling good when i started up and everything seemed ok.I put bike in gear and it stalled immediately.I'm thinking the 3 limiter springs must have moved when i put clutch nut back on.I know i'll have to tear down again.Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks.

Use a little grease to hold the springs in place on the shaft.

Check that the kickstand is up. I was so worried about messing things up after I replaced the gear that I tried to test the clutch with the kickstand down. I put the kickstand up and it worked like a champ.

Ya as Bugs Bunny would say "What a maroon".

I did the POG, clutch spring and Judge's washers at the same time. Everything worked fine once I mastered the kill switch and kickstand. ;)

By the way the maroon comment was a reflection of my personal struggles with the kickstand and not directed at anyone here.

Med dog,
It's a red 99' thing.

Glenn,
Any change? What was the orientation of the limiter springs?

The service manuals shows limiter springs installed like this:
[engine] ) ) )

But the springs should look like this:
[engine] ) ( )

I tried to "glue" them together with petroleum jelly but it was too light. I ended up pasting them together with a heavy bodied chassis grease to hold them in place on the hub during installation. Do not use high temperature grease. With the washers and new spring it was tight fit. If it went together fairly easy it could be the springs were just oriented incorrectly, however I am not sure this would make the bike stall.

Did you adjust your clutch setting to 1 or 2, those are the only 2 settings that work after replacing the POG and clutch spring...

If you are talking about the settings on the clutch and brake levers; these settings are there to adjust the distance between the clutch/brake lever and the grips. They do not affect the clutch operation. I have had mine set at 5; both before and after replacing the clutch spring and adding Judge's washers. 5 is the setting that brings the lever closest to the grip.

Seeing those red and black Nomad's takes me back to when I was six or seven and my Dad bought me my first bicycle. You guessed it, it was red and black. I rode that bike until I was like 15. Finally the rear axle broke and that was the end of it. No telling how many miles I put on that bike.

Did you ever get you bike going again Gman? Was it what you suspected, the springs moved?

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you here. The adjustment knob does adjust the distance of the lever to the handlebar, however you will have more clutch pushrod travel on setting 1 than you will on setting 5 - simply because you are able to move the lever farther on setting 1.

How do I know this? When I installed my Barnett clutch spring, my clutch lever was on setting 5. I found that with the new spring, my bike was trying to move forward, even with the clutch lever fully engaged. I tried changing the lever position knob as a last resort, and on setting 1 the clutch was more fully disengaged, and I could no longer feel it trying to move forward. So the position of the lever does indeed affect the amount of clutch pushrod travel.
